He was born October 12, 1884 in Morgan County, Kentucky, died March 8, 1946 in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky, and is buried in Barbourville, Knox County, Kentucky.

Notes: James Cantrell's father was reportedly Robert Patton Legg, who married James' mother's sister in 1887.

When James Cantrell's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in West Liberty, Morgan County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer in Silverhill, Morgan County, that his closest relative was Sindusky Cantrell of Silverhill, and that he was born October 12, 1884. He married GRACIE PACK, daughter of ALEX PACK and IDA B. PUGH, October 16, 1917 in Morgan County, Kentucky. She was born March 7, 1901 in County, Kentucky, died February 27, 1971, and is buried in Samuel Wright Cemetery in Silverhill, Morgan County, Kentucky.

Notes: Gracie Pack was the sister of Cora E. Pack, Mary Alice Pack, Carrie Mae Pack, and Rosa Pack.

Alex Pack was the brother of Mary Jane Pack, Sarah E. Pack, and George W. Pack.
