MARY F. PELPHREY, daughter of NAOMA SALYER and ALEXANDER JEFFERSON PELPHREY, was born March 14, 1880 in Big Paint Creek, Johnson County, Kentucky, died December 3, 1938 in Staffordsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Pelphrey Cemetery in Barnetts Creek, Johnson County, Kentucky. She married OBEDIAH PELPHREY, son of JIMMIE PELPHREY and (unknown), November 16, 1899 in Johnson County, Kentucky. He was born May 28, 1881 in Kentucky, died April 17, 1946 in Barnetts Creek, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in the family cemetery near Manila, Johnson County, Kentucky.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, Obediah Pelphrey (age 21) married Mary F. Pelphrey (age 19) on November 16, 1899 in Johnson County.

When Oby Pelphrey's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a farmer in Staffordsville, Johnson County, that his closest relative was "Mary Pelphrey (wife)" of Staffordsville, and that he was born May 28, 1879. He was found to be tall, of medium build, and he had blue eyes and dark-colored hair. Not being able to read or write, he signed the card with an "X."

According to her death certificate, Mary Pelphrey died December 3, 1938 in Staffordsville from pulmonary tuberculosis. Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Johnson County, her birth date as March 14, 1883, her marital status as married, her husband as Oba Pelphrey, her parents as Jeff Pelphrey (b. Johnson County) and Oma Salyers (b. Johnson County), the informant as Oba Pelphrey of Barnetts Creek, Kentucky, and the burial place as Barnetts Creek.

According to her obituary, the date that Mary Pelphrey died conflicts with the date on her death certificate. It says that she died at her home in Staffordsville Friday night, but the date of the newspaper is August 8, 1938 (the transcription, not the actual paper). She was survived by her husband, Oba Pelphrey; 3 sons, Milford, Glenn, and Sherman Pelphrey; and 5 daughters, Mrs. Nollis Pickle, Mrs. Madge Pickle, Mrs. Leona Sturgill, Louis Pelphrey, and Pearl Pelphrey. According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Mary Pelphrey died December 3, 1938 in Johnson County at the age of 55.

According to his death certificate, Oba Pelphrey died April 17, 1946 in Barnetts Creek from acute nephritis. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Kentucky, his birth date as May 8, 1881, his marital status as widowed, his wife as Mary Pelphrey, his occupation as farmer, his father as Jemmie Pelphrey (b. Kentucky), his mother's name is blank, the informant as Johnnie Pelphrey of Barnetts Creek, Kentucky, and the burial place as Barnetts Creek.

According to his obituary, Obie Pelphrey (age 63), died April 17, 1946 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clifford Sturgill, in Barnetts Creek, following a long illness from a complication of diseases, and was buried in the family cemetery in Manila. He was preceded in death by his wife. He was survived by 3 sons, Glen Pelphrey (of Sitka), Milford Pelphrey (Van Lear), and John Pelphrey (Paintsville); and 4 daughters, Mrs. Nollis Picklesimer (Ohio), Mrs. Clifford Sturgill (Barnetts Creek), Mrs. Pearl Spradlin (Barnetts Creek), and Mrs. Stambaugh (Sitka). She married WILLIAM L. JACKSON "JACK" WRIGHT, son of WILLIAM B. WRIGHT and PATSY C. HILL, about 1882. He was born April 18, 1865 in Virginia, died January 16, 1932 in Flat Woods, Morgan County, Kentucky, and is buried in Bear Wallow Cemetery in Woodsbend, Morgan County, Kentucky.

Notes: According to Kentucky birth records, Semantha Smith was born December 6, 1859 in Morgan County to John Smith and Caly Conliel [hard to read].

Information found on findagrave.com and a photo of their headstone shows that Semanthey Wright lived from October 15, 1861 to June 15, 1932, and was buried in Bear Wallow Cemetery in Woodsbend, Morgan County, Kentucky, and that Jack Wright lived from April 18, 1865 to January 16, 1934, and was buried in the same cemetery.

According to her death certificate, Samantha Smith Wright died June 15, 1932 in Flat Woods, Morgan County, Kentucky, from a valvular heart lesion. Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Kentucky, her birth date as October 15, 1861, her marital status as married, her husband as W. L. J. Wright, her parents as John Smith (b. Kentucky) and Kaley Cantrill (b. Kentucky), the informant as Perry Henry of Woodsbend, Kentucky, and the burial place as the home graveyard.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Samatha Wright [sic] died June 15, 1932 in Morgan County at the age of 70.

He married MARTHA JANE TRIMBLE, daughter of WILLIAM MARK TRIMBLE and CYNTHIA ESSA REED. She was born June 20, 1867 in Kentucky, and died July 23, 1935 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky.

Notes: Martha Jane Trimble was the sister of Albert Trimble and Sarah M. Trimble.

Although Martha Jane Trimble's mother's name is listed as Cynthia Williams on Martha's death certificate, it's found to be Cynthia Reed on both her brother Charles' birth record and her brother Orlando's death certificate.

According to her death certificate, Martha Jane Lemaster died July 23, 1935 in Paintsville from "Chronic Collitis." Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Kentucky, her birth date as June 20, 1867, her marital status as widowed, her husband as W. H. Lemaster, her parents as Will Mark Trimble (b. Kentucky) and Cynthia Williams (b. Kentucky), and the informant as Alta Blanton of Riceville, Kentucky.

According to her obituary, Jane Lemaster (age 68) of Riceville, mother of 14 children, died July 23, 1935 in Daniels Hospital after an illness of several weeks.

She was born in June of 1874 in Kentucky, died March 16, 1950 in Riceville, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in the family cemetery in Riceville, Johnson County, Kentucky.

He married LIZZIE PERKINS, daughter of WILEY B. PERKINS and SARAH ADAMS. She was born December 31, 1890 in Kentucky, died July 28, 1968 in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky, and is buried in Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky.

Notes: According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, Willey D. Perkins received a license to marry Sarah Adams on March 13, 1891. It was issued by J. H. Hammons, Magoffin County Clerk.

When Emmit Rice's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12 [no year] in Magoffin County, Kentucky, he state that he was a farmer, that his closest relative was Roy Rice of Ivyton, Magoffin County, and that he was born June 10, 1900. He was found to be of medium height and slender build, and he had blue eyes and light-colored hair. Not being able to read or write, he signed the card with an "X."

Information found on findagrave.com and photos of their headstones (photo 2) shows that Emmett Rice lived from May 7, 1898 to May 4, 1953, and was buried in Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky, and that Lizzie Rice lived from December 31, 1890 to July 25, 1968, and was buried in the same cemetery.

According to his death certificate, Emmett Rice died May 4, 1953 in King's Daughters Hospital in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky, from a cerebral hemorrhage. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as McGoffin County, his birth date as June 15, 1898, his marital status as married, his occupation as a retired painter for C & O Railroad, his parents as Alex Rice and Margarett Pace, the informant as "Mrs. Lizzie Perkins Rice (Wife)," and the burial place as Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Kentucky.

Information found on findagrave.com and a photo of her headstone shows that Donna Belcher lived from February 1, 1892 to November 14, 1980, and was buried in Section G in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia. It also shows that Alfred Rye was buried in Rye Cemetery in Danleyton, Greenup County, Kentucky, and that Patrick H. Belcher was buried in Moore Cemetery in Millard, Pike County, Kentucky. No headstone photos are provided for Alfred and Patrick.

According to Social Security death record transcripts, Dona Fletcher was born February 1, 1895, and died in November of 1980. She received her Social Security card in 1973 in Indiana, and her last place of residence was in Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia.

He served as a private in U.S. Army Base Hospital No. 214, and was awarded the Purple Heart. It also shows that he was born February 3, 1895, died October 30, 1955, and was buried in Payton Creek Cemetery in Millard, Kentucky. Dona was living in Baltimore, Maryland, at the time.

Notes: Willie Adams was possibly William Adams, son of Sarah Caudill and Daniel Richard Adams. In the 1900 census, William's family is in house #416 and Minnie's family is in house #369 in the same district. In 1910, Minnie and Willie are living in house #113 in District 102, and William's family is in house #66. Willie Adams claims that he was born November 24, 1872 when he filled out his World War I draft registration card in 1918. William Adams was shown to be born in August of 1873 in the 1900 census.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, Minnie E. Cooper married Willie Adams on March 17, 1904 in Magoffin County at the home of T. M. Cooper. The witnesses were Charlie Yates and Lon Cooper, and the minister was S. M. Whitt.

When Willie Adams' World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 21, 1918 in Magoffin County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer in Cyrus, Magoffin County, that his closest relative was Minnie Adams of Cyrus, and that he was born November 24, 1872. He was found to be of medium height and slender build, and he had blue eyes and light brown hair. Not being able to read or write, he signed the card with an "X."

Information found on findagrave.com and a photo of their headstone shows that Minnie Adams lived from 1884 to 1937, and was buried in Brushy Fork Cemetery in Lickburg, Magoffin County, Kentucky, and that Willie Adams lived from 1873 to 1943, and was buried in the same cemetery.

According to her death certificate, Minnie Adams died February 26, 1937 in Bays, Magoffin County, from typhoid fever. Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Kentucky, her age as 53 years and 1 day, her marital status as married, her husband as Willie Adams, her parents as T. M. Cooper (b. Kentucky) and Louise Pace (b. Kentucky), the informant as Dewey Adams [brother-in-law] of Lickburg, Kentucky, and the undertaker as Patrick Prater.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Minnie Adams died February 26, 1937 in Magoffin County at the age of 03 [sic].

She was born about 1888 in Montague County, Texas, died April 18, 1962 in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky, and is buried in Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky.

Notes: Mary F. Womack's maiden name was determined by finding the death certificate of her son, Guy Womack Leslie (1891-1946).

According to his obituary, James Mantford Bayes (age 80), son of James B. and Amanda Rice Bayes, was a teacher and school examiner in Johnson County schools for 18 years, had worked for years in the auditing offices of the Northeast Coal Company and the Consolidated Coal Company, and he was a postmaster in Auxier, where he and his wife operated a store. He was born February 22, 1883 in Jennies Creek, died March 4, 1963 in Pee Wee Valley Hospital in Pee Wee Valley, Kentucky, and was buried in Lexington Cemetery. He was survived by his son, Guy M. Bayes (of Falls Church, Virginia); 1 daughter, Mrs. Marvin Crider (Middletown, Kentucky); 7 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. She was born March 28, 1876 in Johnson County, Kentucky, and died May 28, 1960 in Johnson County, Kentucky.

From Joe Conley, great-grandson of Deal Pelphrey: "Deal was an exceptionally prosperous man. Upon the death of his father, Deal's entire inheritance was mortgaged. Deal went to Jeff's creditors and asked them to give him till his crops came in and he would pay them. By the end of the year, Deal had saved his family's farm. My grandfather would tell me how he would shave in the mornings as he walked through the fields checking on his herds of cattle. Deal died a relatively young man (47) when he was stricken with the swine flu during the 1918/19 epidemic. Upon his death he left all seven on [of] his children a farm apiece."
