MARY "POLLY" HONAKER, daughter of NICHOLAS HONAKER and ANNA LONG, was born in 1801 in Wythe, Virginia, and died April 4, 1878 in Wythe, Virginia. She married EDMUND DICKENSON on June 9, 1820 in Wythe, Virginia. He was born about 1788 in Hanover County, Virginia, and died March 11, 1875 in Russell County, Virginia.

Notes for Polly Honaker: According to the book "Honaker Family in America" which is sold by the Honaker Family Association, P.O. Box 3636, Alexandria, VA, 22302-9998:

"There are three indications that Mary's first child was born prior to her marriage to Edmund Dickeson. First, in his 1824 will, Mary's father, Nicholas, referred to her child as "my grandchild Matilda Honaker (who is the oldest daughter of Polly Dickenson, formerly Polly Honaker)..." Second, Nicholas left Matilda "a horse, saddle & bridle worth at least $94, one good cow & calf, a good feather bed, and necessary furniture." This was unusually valuable property for a granddaughter of six or seven years, perhaps best explained as an effort by her grandfather to see that this child's security was particularly provided for. Third, thirty years later, in the 1850 Pike Co., Ky., census, Matilda's age was recorded as 32, which would give her birth year as 1818 (also listed on her tombstone), two years before her mother's marriage to Edmund Dickenson.

"She [Polly] married Edmund Dickenson 9 Jun 1820 in Hanover Co., Va. He was born circa 1788 in Hanover Co., Va. According to The Heritage of Russell County, vol 2,, Polly and Edmund built their home on the waters of Copper Creek and then built a grist mill there. He died 11 Apr 1875 in Russel Co., Va.

"Edmund Dickenson served in the War of 1812 and was awarded a land grant for his sevice as well as a pension. After his death, Mary received a widow's pension. It is believed that Edmund was related to the family of Henry Dickenson II and Henry Dickenson III, but this has not been verified."

Notes for Edmund Dickenson: It's possible that Edmund's parents' were Henry and Rosamond (Rozamon) Dickenson, and that his brothers' names were George, Lewis, and maybe Griffen. Edmund's possible sister was named Joanna Elizabeth (also called Rosamond at times), who married a man by the name of Henry Meade. The connections are very probable, but not proven at this point. George married Henry Meade's daughter, Patty, who was from Henry's first marriage.

Edmund's parents (if they were indeed his parents) originally lived in Louisa County, Virginia and later moved to Russell County. Henry died about 1798, as that was the date that his will was probated, and Rozamon was the administrator. He was very poor and mentioned nothing about children. It's possible that they were all grown and that he had nothing to leave them.

Samuel (their son) inherited the home place, looked after Edmund, Polly and Betsey until their deaths. He had several children, including Roscoe who inherited the home place at Samuel's death. After the death of Roscoe, the home place was sold out of the family and the money divided between two nieces, Frances and Ruth, who had cared for Roscoe in his elderly years.

The children of POLLY HONAKER and EDMUND DICKENSON are:

MATILDA HONAKER DICKENSON, daughter of MARY "POLLY" HONAKER and EDMUND DICKENSON, was born about 1818 in Wythe, Virginia, and died August, 1885 in Brushy Creek, Magoffin County, Kentucky. She married WILLIAM "HENRY" WHITT, son of JOHN WILLIAM "BILLY" WHITT and MARY "POLLY" LEWIS SMITH. He was born about 1814 in Virginia.

Notes: On page 98 of the 1850 census for Pike County, Kentucky (dated September 10, 1850), Henry Whit is listed as the head of the household for house #708, he's a farmer, born in Virginia, and he's 36 years old. Also listed are Matilda (born in Virginia, age, 32), Nancy A. (born in Virginia, age, 14), Silicia E. (born in Virginia, age, 12), Isaac M. (born in Kentucky, age, 7), John H. (born in Kentucky, age, 5), Mary J. (born in Kentucky, age, 3), and Samuel M. (born in Kentucky, age, 3 months).

On page 86 of the 1860 census for District 1 in Pike County, Kentucky (dated July 20, 1860), Henry Whit is listed as the head of the household for house #392, he's a farmer, born in Virginia, and he's 46 years old. Also listed are Matilda Whit (born in Virginia, age, 41), Silisa E. (born in Virginia, age, 22), Isaac M. (born in Kentucky age, 18), John H. (born in Kentucky age, 16), Mary J. (born in Kentucky age, 13), Samuel M. (born in Kentucky age, 10), M.C. (born in Kentucky age, 7), George M. (born in Kentucky, age 5), Sarah (born in Kentucky, age 2), Callihan (born in Kentucky, age 2), and Rebecca (born in Kentucky, age 3 months).

On page 9 of the 1870 census for District 8 in Pike County, Kentucky (dated August 17, 1870), Henry Whit is listed as the head of the household for house #62, he's a farmer, born in Virginia, and he's 55 years old. Also listed are Matilda (wife, born in Virginia, age 52), Samuel M. (son, born in Kentucky, 20), Caroline M. (daughter, born in Kentucky, age 18), George M. (son, born in Kentucky, age 14), Sarah J. (daughter, born in Kentucky, age 12), Callahan E. (son, born in Kentucky, age 12), Rebecca A. (daughter, born in Kentucky, age 10), Amanda M. (daughter, born in Kentucky, age 7), Louisa E. (daughter, born in Kentucky, age 3), Mary J. Sexton (born in Kentucky, age 22), Thomas J. Sexton (born in Kentucky, 2), and Susanna Hunt (born in Virginia, 24). This Mary J. Sexton is no doubt Henry and Matilda's daughter, and Thomas must be her son. There were a couple of different "Hunts" that this family married into and further research would need to be done to determine the relationship of Susanna Hunt.

On page 6 of the 1880 census for Precinct 4 (Middle Fork) in Magoffin County, Kentucky (dated 16th day of June, 1880), Henry Whitt is listed as head of the household (house #159), a minister, born in Virginia, parents born in Virginia, and is age 65. Also listed are Matilda (wife, born in Virginia, parents born in Virginia, age 55), Rebecca A. (daughter, born in Kentucky, age 18), Mandy M. (daughter, born in Kentucky, age 16), Louisia (daughter, born in Kentucky, age 13). They are living next to son George.

According to the book "Honaker Family in America" which is sold by the Honaker Family Association, P.O. Box 3636, Alexandria, VA, 22302-9998, Matilda was:

"Born in 1818 in Virginia. Died 18 Aug 1885 in Salyersville, Magoffin Co., Kentucky.

"She married William Henry Whitt (called Henry), son of Billy Whitt, circa 1835. Born in 1814 in Russell Co., Va. Died in Salyersville, Ky. They lived in Virginia until 1838 when they moved to Kentucky.

"Interestingly, Hans Jacob's son Martin also had a daughter named Mary whose second husband was William Whitt. That William was unlikely to be Matilda's father-in-law because they probably were about the same age. The names cannot be coincidental, however, so the two Williams were likely cousins to some degree. One researcher reported that Stokes Co., N.C. census records document the existence of a William Henry Whitt, born in 1787, who married Nancy Unknown, also born in 1787 in Stokes County. They had a son named William Henry born in Virginia in 1814. The elder Whitt moved from N.C., first to Bedford Co., Va., then to Russell Co., Va., and had a brother named John.

"Matilda's husband Henry seemed to be into everything. He was a farmer, livestock raiser, lumberman, silversmith, wooden clockmaker, backwoods dentist, a Pike Co., Ky., justice of the peace, and Baptist minister who apparently traveled back and forth between former residences and churches, taking the time to entertain people with a horse that could do tricks. He officiated at weddings, including those of his own children.

"Henry owned considerable property in Pike Co., Ky. It is believed that he and Matilda lived first in Russell Co., Va. (they and their first two children were born in Va.). They then moved to Buchanan Co., Va; the Upper Johns Creek area of Pike Co., Ky.; and finally to Magoffin Co., Ky. The 1840 Pike County census is a source for information up to that time, listing Henry as a farmer with real estate valued at $150. During the Civil War, he and Samuel visited Magoffin County and Mt. Sterling., Ky., to buy livestock, principally mules to work in a flourishing yellow poplar lumber business.

"The 1880 Magoffin County census and subsequent records indicate that William Henry and Matilda had 14 children. Matilda was known to be rather cross, but as a descendant, Ruth Gerlach (a daughter of Pearl Whitt Litteral) observed, anyone with that many children was likely to be cross."

There are reports that have Matilda being born as early as 1817, and these reports question whether her last name is Honaker, Dickenson, or whether Edmund Dickenson is even her father. There are other reports that have her being born as late as 1825.

According to The Honaker Family Association "One researcher found sworn statements in Military and Pension Records by Matilda's parents Edmund and Mary which state they married in April 1817, well before the previously reported marriage date. This would mean that Edmund was probably Matilda's father. The sworn statements indicate that Mary eluded her parents to marry Edmund at the home of George Dickenson, evidence that her family did not approve of the marriage.

"It may be that Matilda's middle name was Honaker, which could explain why her grandfather referred to her as such; or he may have done so because of the family's disapproval of Edmund. At the time of Nicholas' will, she was his only grandchild.

"Matilda was also reported born in 1821 and ca. 1825, years which would fall within the 1840 census brackets for the age for which she was recorded. Her husband Henry was the son of John William Whitt (called Billy) and Mary Lewis Smith (called Polly). Born in New Garden, Virginia."

The children of MATILDA HONAKER DICKENSON and HENRY WHITT are:

LARS ANDREAS JENSEN, son of JENS TONNESEN and ANNE BIRGETTE STAALESDATTER, was born June 6, 1845 in Flekkefjord, Norway, and died December 4, 1897 in Flekkefjord, Norway. He married TOBINE BOLETTE OLSDATTER. She was born June 8, 1845 in Midtfjeldsaa, Norway, and died March 21, 1910.

Notes for Lars Jensen and Tobine Olsdatter: They lived on a farm located on the interior of a fjord named Flekkefjord on the southeast part of of the country.

Lars was a carpenter, finishing his apprenticeship about 1870-1871.

In Norway the children took their father's first name as their last name. That is how Lars Andreas became a Jensen - sen means "son of" in Norwegian. For the daughters it would be Jensdatter - datter means daughter in Norwegian. In order to help alleviate the confusion of several people having a common name like Jensen, people frequently added the name of the farm or town they were from after their name. Tobine Bolette Olsdatter was also known as Tobine Bolette Olsdatter Midtfjeldsaa for this reason. If a person moved from one area to another they would change the last part of their name to reflect the new area where they were living. Sometimes the word "pa" or the word "of" would precede the name of the farm or area.

Today there is a town of Fjeldsaa, one of East Fjeldsaa and one of Mid Fjeldsaa, all near the original site.

The children of LARS LARSEN and TOBINE OLSDATTER are:

LEWIS C. FULLEN (FULTON) DICKENSON/DICKERSON, son of MARY "POLLY" HONAKER and EDMUND DICKENSON, was born February 18, 1840 in Russell County, Virginia, and died November 12, 1915 in Beattyville, Lee County, Kentucky. He is buried in the Akers/Dickerson Cemetery at Maloney Ridge, Beattyville, Kentucky in an unmarked grave. He married LUCINDA JOHANNAH PATRICK, daughter of JAMES S. PATRICK and MARY "POLLY" ANNE McGUIRE, February 11, 1874. She was born in June of 1856 in Proctor, Owsley County, Kentucky, and died between 1900 and 1910. She is also buried in the Akers/Dickerson Cemetery at Maloney Ridge, Beattyville, Kentucky in an unmarked grave.

Notes for Lewis C. Fullen Dickerson: In the 1850 Russell County, Virginia census his name is listed as "Fulton." He relocated to Lee County, Kentucky after the Civil War and lived with his brother Henry and Henry's two sons. Henry was a widower at that time.

Lewis originally signed up in Russell County, Virginia for the Civil War. He was 21 at the time and signed with the 37th Infantry on May 10, 1861. His original unit was headed by Samuel Fulkerson who was killed in battle. His unit was then merged with the unit of Stonewall Jackson and was in the first Kernstown Battle, which nearly wiped out the Confederate troops of Jackson.

Lewis was wounded, but there were many that were killed. Lewis spent several months in the hospital at Lexington, Virginia. For some reason he decided to go AWOL in the early part of 1863. It could have been the horrendous conditions they were expected to fight under, barefoot and hungry most of the time. He was picked up in Russell County and became a POW. He was then brought to the Louisville, Kentucky Prison Hospital - maybe he was wounded again or he was possibly still suffering from the old wound. Through freewill or being forced by the North, he signed the Amnesty Agreement. This agreement basically said that he would not take up arms against the North again and they would let him go free if he remained north of the Mason-Dixon line. Well, they released him and he immediately went into Kentucky and signed with the 4th Kentucky Cavalry anyway.

The 4th Kentucky Calvary was headed by General John Hunt Morgan who was leading a major campaign for the South. The 4th was sometimes described as pillagers and plunderers. They did whatever they needed to do to further the cause of the South, including robbing a bank in Winchester, Kentucky to get money to operate. A lot of people in the area considered them outlaws.

Lewis had been fighting around Mt. Sterling, Winchester, Morgan County and stayed with his brother Henry Clay during this time. He used the name "Dickerson" while he was in the 4th Cavalry, possibly so he couldn't be connected to the Dickenson that had signed the Amnesty Agreement.

The few family stories that are told about Lewis say that he was "mean as hell." It's possible that the military life that he led was the cause of this. He was a small man with washed out blue eyes and family legend has it that he once hung a man. He must have made a lot of money in real estate because the deed and mortgage books in the Lee County, Kentucky, courthouse are full of transactions for him, both mortgages to other people and transfers of property.

After service in the Civil War, Lewis settled in Lee County, Kentucky, along with his brother, Henry Clay Dickerson, and his sister, Martha Jane "Patsy" Dickenson. (Patsy's name is listed as "Patsey" in the 1850 Russell County census).

Lewis and Johannah had 11 children, 6 of which survived infancy.

The children of LEWIS DICKERSON and JOHANNAH PATRICK are:

      1. MARY ANNE "MOLLY" DICKERSON, b. November 14, 1874, Proctor, Lee County, Kentucky, d. September 27, 1957, Libby, Montana, m. JAMES WINSLOW DANIEL, September 18, 1889, Lee County, Kentucky.
      2. CORDELIA "CORDIE" DICKERSON, b. June, 1877, Lee County, Kentucky, m. JOHN H. SMITH.
      3. WILLIAM HENRY "WILLIE" (or "BILL") DICKERSON, b. January 18, 1879, Lee County, Kentucky, d. January 11, 1967, Lee County, Kentucky, buried at Proctor Cemetery, Maloney Ridge, Lee County, Kentucky. He m. (1) ABBIE COLE. He m. (2) ETHEL VANDERPOOL DICKERSON.

CALLIHAN LONZO WHITT, son of MATILDA HONAKER DICKENSON and WILLIAM HENRY WHITT, was born January 14, 1858 in Pike County, Kentucky, and died in January of 1885 in Magoffin County, Kentucky. He married SARAH ELIZABETH PACE, daughter of MATHEW PACE and ELIZABETH SALYER, December 5, 1878 in Magoffin County, Kentucky. She was born March 30, 1858 in Magoffin County, Kentucky. She married (2) HENRY SAYLOR, son of CLARINDA SALYER and MARTIN SAYLOR, about 1886. He was born in March of 1860 in Kentucky.

Notes: The following information comes from Rhonda Fulkerson:

"Alma (Whitt) Williams wrote in family bible:

"Callahan L. Whitt was murdered about 1885. Family story told is: Callahan accused a young man named Stapleton of stealing corn or something. The young man's father told the boy that he would be a coward if he didn't shoot Callahan... so the boy shot him. Family and friends of Callahan broke into the jail, one standing on another's shoulder, and removed the boy from the jail through the window. The group hanged the young Stapleton boy. Sara (Pace) Whitt, Callahan's wife was accused of placing the noose around his neck. Others involved were: Isaac Whitt (Callahan's brother) and Tommy Cooper (married Sarah's sister, Martha). Rumor goes that Tommy Cooper hung himself and Isaac was kicked by a mule and it killed him."

The following article was taken from The Lexington Press, which was printed in Lexington, Kentucky, January 10, 1885. It was re-typed with errors intact by Rhonda:

    An Outrageous Crime

News has just reached here from Salyersville, a mountain town, that one of the most outrageous crimes that stain the records of eastern Kentucky was perpetrated on John Stapleton on the night of the 3d inst., at Salyersville, Ky. The facts pertaining thereto are about these: Two months ago the son of this man, without provocation, shot and killed Callabar White, which outrage incited the people of Magoffin to such an extent that for safety the prisoner, after an examining trial, which resulted in holding him over without bail, was sent to Mt. Sterling for protection and is there now. The indignant friends of White and bitter enemies of Stapleton, the father of the murdered man, on the evidence of two women, had him arrested, charged with being accessory to the crime. It is not believed there was anything in it. But no the evidence Stapleton was held over on a bond of $500, and failing to give it was remanded to jail about 10 o'clock that night. Twenty or thirty men, a masked mob, yelling and making themselves hideous, entered the town, overpowered the jailer, took the prisoner to a tree near by and hung him. It is believed that Stapleton was innocent of the charge and the infuriated mob was aroused solely by the women who proved he had made threats against White. The better class, who stand by law and order, are now enemies to the mob and something more serious may come out of it.

The following article was taken from a Mt. Sterling newspaper in January, 1885. It was also sent by Rhonda:

    A Mob in Magoffin

Mt. Sterling, Jan. 8 - News has just been received here of a most shocking outrage committed in Magoffin county last Saturday night in the lynching of John Stapleton, Sr. The particulars are as follows: A few weeks ago Stapleton's son shot and killed Colliham White, for which killing he was sent here for safe-keeping, to escape mob violence. Said killing was entirely unprovoked, and so inflamed the community that nothing short of blood would satisfy their rage. On a pretense, old man Stapleton was shortly after arrested as being an accessory to the above named crime, appeared before an examining court and was held over in the sum of $500. Being unable to execute bond for that amount, he was sent to jail. That night a mob of twenty or thirty men forced an entrance into the jail, took the prisoner out and hung him in plain view of the Courthouse. The good citizens of Magoffin condemn in the plainest language this dastardly act, and the most strenuous efforts will be made to bring the participators to justice.

Notes: According to "The Kentucky Encyclopedia" by John E Kleber, which was published in 1992:

"Buell Hilton Kazee, a minister known for his folk music, was born on August 29, 1900, in Magoffin County, Kentucky, to John Franklin and Abigail Jane Kazee. A graduate of the Baptist Magoffin Institute and Georgetown College and an ordained minister for fifty-two years, Kazee served churches in Lexington and Morehead, Kentucky, and taught at Lexington Baptist College. He collected folk music as a hobby, and at one point during his life mad dozens of recordings of folk songs, accompanying himself on the banjo. During 1926-30 he recorded fifty-two songs for Brunswick and Vocalion in New York. In 1928 Kazee first performed for Columbia Records, in Johnson County, Tennessee, and his songs later appeared under the Folkways label.

"Kazee was also the author of two books on religion and one on banjo techniques. He married Lucille Jones in 1928; they had two sons, Allen and Philip Ray, both of whom became ministers. He married Jennie Turnmeyer in 1950. Kazee died on August 31, 1976, in Winchester, Kentucky, and was buried in Marsh Fork [Mash Fork]."

Taken from a biography on AllMusic.com, written by Sandra Brennan:

"Buell Kazee was a minister who played banjo and sang the ancient songs of his beloved Kentucky mountains during the 1920s. Considered one of the very best folk singers in U.S. history, he was a master of the high, "lonesome" singing style of the Appalachian balladeer. Kazee was born in the foothill town of Burton Fork, KY, and learned most of his songs from his family. He began picking banjo at age five and often played during local gatherings. He prepared for the clergy even as a teen and after high school began studying English, Creek, and Latin at Georgetown College, KY. It was there that he began to understand the significance of his family and friends' traditional songs. Kazee formally studied singing and music in order to transcribe the old songs and make them more contemporary. Following his graduation in 1925, he gave a "folk music" concert at the University of Kentucky. He wore a tie and tails while playing the banjo and piano, san in his specially trained "formal" voice, and gave lectures about the history of the songs. The show was a great success, so he repeated it several times over the following years.

"In 1927, he was asked to record the songs for Brunswick in New York, and he was signed to the label on the condition that he sing using his high, tight "mountain" voice and forego his formal vocal training. Over the next two years, he recorded over 50 songs backed by New York musicians. Many were religious, but others ranged from traditional to popular ballads, including "Lady Gay," "The Sporting Bachelors," and "The Orphan Girl." His biggest hit was a version of "On Top of Old Smoky" called "Little Mohee," which sold over 15,000 copies. In the early '30s, the recently married Kazee lost interest in pursuing a music career and stopped touring to become the minister of a church in Morehead, KY. For the next 22 years, he only sang publicly at revival meetings. Much later, he began using folk themes to compose formal music, such as the cantata-based on the old Sacred Harp piece "The White Pilgrim." During the folk revival of the early '60s, he made a comeback and was one of the first to appear at the Newport festivals. In addition to preaching and singing, Kazee also wrote three religious books and a book on banjo playing. He died in 1976."

There is a My Space page devoted to Buell Kazee and it's found here: Buell Kazee's My Space Page. This exerpt comes from that page:

"The Appalachian Mountains have nurtured many fine traditional musicians, and the late Buell Kazee was one of the finest. He was born at the head of Burton Fork in Magoffin County in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, and was an extraordinary ballad singer, with a versatile voice and a profound sense of the place the ballad in musical literature. As a Baptist minister he had a deep sense of the tradition in both theology and music. Because most of his life was taken up with preaching and his duties to his congregation, he had a limited time for music. Yet when he performed , he did so with integrity and arresting style. He had an extensive repertoire of traditional music including rare ballads and songs. With his knowledge of both music and folklore, he preserved with discerning ear and voice the modes and styles of the past. Bess Lomax Howes introduced him at the Newport Folk Festival as the man from whom so many modern folk singers, such as Joan Baez, had learned some of their songs. His banjo style was a unique variation on the traditional frailing style, and he played in as many as eleven different tunings. Although Brunswick Records released 52 numbers by Buell Kazee on 78 rpm recordings in the late 1920s, and Harry Smith included him in his influential Anthology of American Folk Music in 1952 (re-released by Smithsonian Folkways on CDs in 1997), his music was relatively unknown to the American public until Buell Kazee Sings and Plays was released by Folkways in 1958. However, Buell was not happy with this LP because the recording was done under informal conditions in his home over two days, and he felt he had not performed well.

".. A Baptist minister from Lexington, Kentucy Buell Kazee (1900-1976) was born in the Kentucky town of Burton's Fork. Kazee was a performer/collector of Appalachian folk songs (much like North Carolinian Bascom Lamar Lunsford and the fellow Kentuckian Bradley Kinkaid). He performed prepared programs with a scholarly approach for various audiences. Kazee came from a trained musical background and took pride in his presentation. Aside from Appalachian folk songs, his repertoire also included sentimental songs which he frequently insisted be included in his recordings and programs (Old Time Music, Summer 1976, pg. 17). Kazee recorded 58 songs for Brunswick during 1927-1929 and an additional LP for Folkways in 1958. From 1916 on, Kazee primarily considered himself a minister with music as a sideline. His precise banjo playing was also one of his strong points which he played in Appalachian clawhammer style. The son "The Butcher Boy" is a widespread Anglo-American ballad (see the references in Smith's notes)."
