      Robert Ray Blanton's obituary (Taken from the obituary page of the The Johnson County Historical & Genealogical Society's website.): Robert Ray Blanton, 76, of New Boston, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at his residence. Born Oct. 20, 1931, in Van Lear, Ky., the son of the late Erwin and Myrtle Spradlin Blanton, he was a maintenance man for Lone Star Steel in Texas. He had worked at Empire-Detroit Steel in New Boston and Goodyear Atomic Plant in Piketon, and was an Air Force veteran. He loved fishing, building and was a member of Garden City Free Will Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday school teacher for many years. Robert loved the Lord and was very active in his church. He was an artist, loved reading and studying God's word daily. He was truly a man of God. Robert was a wonderful husband and will be missed dearly by his wife, Barbara Montgomery Blanton, whom he married April 12, 1975, at Garden City Free Will Baptist in Wheelersburg. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one brother, Erwin Blanton Jr. of Smithville, Mo.; and two sisters, Joy Cremeans of Wheelersburg and Alene Neubecker of Lucasville. Funeral services will be conducted noon Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at Garden City Free Will Baptist Church in Wheelersburg, with Pastor Blaine Etterling officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Gardens in Franklin Furnace.

Notes: When Charles Mathews Kleem's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Cincinnati, Ohio, he stated that he was a "Move Man" working for Charles Mathews Kleem, that his closest relative was Stella Kleem [hard to read] of Hamilton County, Ohio, and that he was born March 17, 1879. He was found to be tall, of medium build, and he had blue eyes and brown hair.

When Henry Adams' World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Magoffin County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer in Oil Springs, Johnson County, that his closest relative was Rebecca Adams of Oil Springs, and that he was born April 6, 1882. He was found to be tall, of medium build, and he had brown eyes and dark-colored hair. Not being able to read or write, he signed the card with an "X."

Information found on findagrave.com and photos of their headstones (photo 2) shows that Minnie Belle Montgomery Howard Adams lived from March of 1891 to June of 1962, was buried in Henry Adams Cemetery in Falcon, Magoffin County, Kentucky, that Henry Adams lived from April 6, 1881 to March 26, 1976, was buried in the same cemetery, and that Kernnie Adams lived from 1930 to 1944, and was buried in the same cemetery.

According to her death certificate, Rebecca An Conley Adams [sic] died October 1, 1924 in State Road Fork from blood poisoning from child birth. Also on this certificate, her age is listed as 36 years 9 days, her marital status as married, her parents as J. D. Conley (b. Kentucky) and Alefair Sparks (b. Kentucky), the informant as J. D. Conley of Falcon, Kentucky, and the burial place as Wm. Conley Graveyard in Falcon.

She was known for her Thanksgiving dressing. Barbara had a great sense of humor and a zest for life and was the life of the party. Barbara was a homemaker and at one time was the owner and operator of a restaurant. Barbara was a military wife for forty years and a Cub Scout mother. She was also involved in her kids PTA. Barbara was a good person. You always knew where you stood with her and she always stood up for what was right. She was a wonderful woman and her first love was spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. A memorial service for Barbara will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at the First Baptist Church of Moore, 301 NE 27th Street, Moore, Oklahoma."

For some unknown reason, Santford Spradlin's obituary, which was reportedly in the Paintsville Herald on Thursday, January 5, 1939, has his death date as November 25, 1938. He's in the 1940 census and his death certificate is dated November 25, 1941.

When Sant Spradlin's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a miner working for H. H. Randolph in Williamson, Mingo County, West Virginia, that his closest relative was Julia Spradlin of Denver, Johnson County, and that he was born December 22, 1879. He was found to be of medium height and slender build, and he had blue eyes and brown hair.

Information found on the Johnson County Historical Society's website shows that Julia Conley Spradlin lived from 1884 to December 20, 1983, and was buried in Sherman Spradlin Cemetery in Denver, and that Sanford Spradlin lived from December 23, 1881 to November 25, 1941, and was buried in the same cemetery.

According to his obituary, Sant Spradlin, son of the late John Spradlin, was born in Denver, Johnson County, 59 years prior, died November 25, 1938 at home in Denver following a stroke, and was buried in the family cemetery near Denver. He was married to Julia Conley and they had the following children: Virgie, Norman, Arnold, Mrs. Dora Ward, Mrs. Laura Spradlin, Arbie, Mrs. Bessie Ratliff, and Anna Mary Spradlin. He was survived by one brother, Smith Spradlin.

When Smith Conley's World War I draft registration card was filled out on June 5, 1917 in Johnson County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a coal miner, that he had a wife and one child in Thelma, Kentucky, and that he was born September 6, 1887 in Paintsville, Johnson County. He was found to be 5 feet 11 inches tall, of medium build, and he had dark-colored eyes and dark-colored hair.

According to his obituary, Smith Conley (age 68), son of John Elliott and Susan James Conley, was a lifelong resident of Paintsville. He was born September 6, 1888 in Jennies Creek, died March 26, 1957 at home in Blackberry after an illness of 4 months, and was buried in Van Lear. He was married April 21, 1915 to Gracie Preston Conley, who survived him. He was also survived by 7 sons, Hershel Conley (of Paintsville), Bart Conley (Paintsville), William C. Conley (Paintsville), James O. Conley (Paintsville), and Roy E. Conley (Paintsville), John C. Conley (Columbus, Ohio), and Curtis R. Conley (Columbus, Ohio); 2 daughters, Mrs. Raymond Kent (Gallipolis, Ohio) and Mrs. Orville Adams (Chesapeake, Ohio); 2 brothers, Claude Conley (Minford, Indiana) and Alfred Conley (Van Lear); and 2 sisters, Mrs. Laura Lundy (Lucasville, Ohio) and Mrs. Mae Sherman (Van Lear). According to her obituary, Grace Preston Conley (age 65), daughter of the late George H. and Rebecca Conley Preston, was a resident of Paintsville for 30 years prior to her death. She was born January 18, 1897 in Thelma, and died February 18, 1962 in a local Johnson County hospital, 2 months after breaking her hip in a fall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Smith Conley, on March 27, 1957. She was survived by 7 sons, Hershell, Bert, Bill, and Roy Conley (all of Paintsville), John, James, and Curtis Conley (all of Columbus, Ohio); 2 daughters, Catherine Arms (Chesapeake, Ohio) and Virginia Kent (Paintsville); 23 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. A scaffolding on which he was working collapsed, according to preliminary information, and Conley fell nearly 70 feet. The body was taken to the Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville, No information was available at press time concerning funeral arrangements. Mr. Conley is survived by his wife, Mae, a son and daughter at home, Billy and Becky Conley, and two married daughters, Mrs. Earl Lee (Pam) [Pamela Colleen Conley] Castle and Mrs. Joe (Pat) [Patricia Mae Conley] Porter. He married FANNY ADAMS, daughter of GREEN A. ADAMS and PHOEBE MAY, about 1920. She was born January 1, 1902 in Magoffin County, Kentucky, died January 26, 1949 in Conley, Magoffin County, Kentucky, and is buried in Mathie Pace Cemetery in Conley, Magoffin County, Kentucky.

Notes: Fanny Adams isn't shown living with her family in any census, but her parents' names are on her death certificate.

Information found on findagrave.com and a photo of their headstone shows that Dola Pace lived from March 1904 to September 1950, , and that Fannie Pace lived from June 1906 to January 1950, and was buried in the same cemetery.

According to his death certificate, Dola Pace died September 16, 1949 in Paintsville Hospital in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, after being shot, while working in Riceville, by a pistol in the face, head, and right leg. He lived for 5 hours after being shot. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Magoffin County, his birth date as November 16, 1901, his marital status as married, his occupation as farmer and deputy sheriff, his parents as Tayalor Pace [sic] and Sarah Adams, and the burial place as Pace Cemetery in Conley, Kentucky.

Notes: When Rollie Tackett's World War I draft registration card was filled out on June 5, 1917 in Greenup County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer in Argillite, Kentucky, that he had a wife and 2 children, and that he was born July 30, 1893 in Lickburg, Kentucky. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had brown eyes and brown hair.

There was a Mary Amanda Tackett that died April 1, 1942 in Pike County, which is where Rollie Tackett died in 1975.

According to Social Security death record transcripts, Rollie Tackett was born July 31, 1893, and died in June of 1975. He received his Social Security card in 1951-53 in Ohio, and his last place of residence was in Bainbridge, Ross County, Ohio.

Nancy Patrick reportedly died in 1886.

When Leander Bayes' World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Magoffin County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a farmer in Bloomington, Magoffin County, that his closest relative was Hattie Bayes of Bloomington, and that he was born August 27, 1879. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had brown eyes and brown hair.

According to Army enlistment records, Leander Bayes enlisted in the 29th Infantry, Company D, for a period of 3 years in Myrtle, Kentucky, on February 21, 1901. According to this record, he was born in Denver, Kentucky, he was 21 years 6 months old, he was a teacher, he had brown eyes, brown hair, and a ruddy complexion, and he was 5 feet 9 1/2 inches tall. He was discharged February 26, 1904 in Angel Island, California.

Information found on findagrave.com and a photos of their headstones (photo 2) (photo 3) shows that Hattie Cooper Bayes lived from July 24, 1883 to March 2, 1971, and was buried in Winchester Cemetery in Winchester, Clark County, Kentucky, that Leander "Lee" Bayes lived from August 27, 1879 to October 16, 1953, was buried in the same cemetery, and that Lena Bayes lived from July 14, 1921 to May 1, 1967, and was buried in the same cemetery. Leander's headstone also shows that he served in "D. Co. 19th U.S. Inf 1901-1904."

According to his death certificate, Leander Bayes died October 16, 1953 in West Liberty, Morgan County, Kentucky, from hypertensive heart disease. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Johnson County, Kentucky, his birth date as August 27, 1879, his marital status as married, his occupation as retired merchant, his parents as James B. Bayes and Amanda Rice, the informant as Mrs. Gay Tredway, the burial place as Winchester Cemetery in Winchester, Kentucky, and that he was a veteran of the Spanish American War.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Leander Bayes died October 16, 1953 in Morgan County at the age of 74. He was living in Morgan County at the time of his death.

According to Social Security death record transcripts, Hattie Bayes was born July 24, 1883, and died in March of 1971. She received her Social Security card in 1962 in Kentucky, and her last place of residence was in West Liberty, Morgan County, Kentucky.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Hattie Bayes died March 21, 1971 in Morgan County at the age of 87.

On page 15 of the 1880 census for District 64 (Precinct 2 - Bloomington) in Magoffin County, Kentucky (dated June 19, 1880), J. H. Cooper is listed as the head of the household for house #351, he's a farmer, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, and he's 26 years old. Also listed are Nancy (wife, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, age 23).

On page 49 of the 1900 census for District 54 (Bloomington) in Magoffin County, Kentucky (dated June 28, 1900), Hattie Cooper is found living in the home of her father and step-mother. John F. Cooper is listed as the head of the household for house #426, he's a farmer, born in December of 1853 in Kentucky, married for 23 years, and he's 46 years old. Also listed are Bertheus (wife, born in December of 1854 in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, married for 23 years, she's given birth to 7 children and all are still living, age 45), Rolly (son, born in October of 1880 in Kentucky, age 19), Hattie (daughter, born in July of 1883 in Kentucky, age 16), Carry (daughter, born in February of 1889 in Kentucky, age 11), Carl (son, born in June of 1891 in Kentucky, age 8), Anna (daughter, born in April of 1894 in Kentucky, age 6), Earl (son, born in December of 1897 in Kentucky, age 3), and Farish Lacey (step-son, marital status is blank, farm laborer, born in January of 1876 in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, age 24). Although it shows that John and Betheus (Mary) were married for 23 years, in 1910 the census shows both of them married for 22 years and on their second marriage.

On page 18 of the 1910 census for District 105 (Bloomington) in Magoffin County, Kentucky (dated April 26, 1910), Leander Bayes is listed as the head of the household for house #129, he's a farmer, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, 1st marriage, married for 5 years, and he's 30 years old. Also listed are Hattie (wife, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, 1st marriage, she's given birth to 1 child and that child is still living, age 27), and Gay (daughter, born in Kentucky, age 3).

On page 1 of the 1920 census for District 202 (Caney) in Morgan County, Kentucky (dated January 2 & 3, 1920), Leander Bays is listed as the head of the household for house #6, he's a farmer, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, and he's 40 years old. Also listed are Hattie (wife, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, age 36), and Gay (daughter, born in Kentucky, age 12).

On page 1 of the 1930 census for District 88-16 (Magisterial District No. 4) in Morgan County, Kentucky (dated April 7, 1930), Lee Bayes is listed as the head of the household for house #77 [although most of the information on this page has been crossed out], he's a merchant in a general store, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, first married at age 25, and he's 50 years old. Also listed are Hattie (wife, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, first married at 21, age 46), Lena (daughter, born in Kentucky, age 8), and Gay Carter (daughter, married, manager of a local utility company, born in Kentucky, first married at 16, age 23).

On page 9 of the 1930 census for District 88-7 (Magisterial District No. 2) in Morgan County, Kentucky (dated April 15, 1930), Lee Bayes is listed as the head of the household for house #41, he's a merchant in a general store, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, first married at age 25, and he's 50 years old. Also listed are Hattie (wife, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, first married at 21, age 46), and Gay Carter (daughter, married, manager of a local utility company, born in Kentucky, first married at 16, age 23).

On page 2 of the 1940 census for District 88-12 in Morgan County, Kentucky (dated April 4, 1940), Lee Bays is listed as the head of the household for house #13, he's not working, born in Kentucky, he's living in the same house that he was in 1935, he has 4 years of high school, and he's 60 years old. Also listed are Hallie (wife, born in Kentucky, 8th grade education, age 56), and Lena (daughter, born in Kentucky, she's living in the same house that she was in 1935, 5th grade education, age 18).
