Notes: According to family lore, Thaddeus and his family came down the Allegheny River on a pole raft to the Ohio River around 1810-1813. They settled in Portsmouth, Ohio, and later moved about 20 miles northeast to Harrison, Ohio. Here they built an eight-room log cabin.

Thaddeus and son Joseph were good friends with William Henry Harrison. Joseph met him in the War of 1812, before his presidency, and they became good friends. He used to visit Thaddeus and Joseph there in the log cabin. Joseph named the township for him, which he and Thaddeus and his brothers owned most of. The town has since been renamed Minford (Ohio) but at one time was called Harrisonville.

Thaddeus and Joseph were both ordained Baptist ministers and are buried next to each other. Thaddeus was also an American Revolution veteran.

Thaddeus' grave is in the town of Minford, Ohio - about a 20 minute drive from Portsmouth. Take Rt 139 north out of Portsmouth and head for Minford. In Minford, turn right on State Route 335. About 1/2 to 1 mile on the right is Grange Hall (across from a large school). It's just a cement block small building in a pretty grove of trees. Pull into the Grange and to your left, up a little hill, is the small cemetery. Thaddeus is to the left and towards the back. It shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to find the grave as there are only maybe 50 to 70 graves still marked.

Notes: Isaac Hitchcock was a Mountain Man. He was in California as early as 1833-1834 with the Bonneville Party. Later, he was a member and guide, along with his daughter Elizabeth Patterson and her children, in the Murphy-Stephens Party. They were the first to take wagons over what is now known as Donner Pass - infamous for the Donner Party. Isaac's wife died prior to emigration. There is no absolute proof that Isaac Hitchcock was the son of Joshua and Tryphena.

According to her obituary, Elizabeth Rice (age 87), widow of the late Wall Rice, died September 13, 1930, and was buried in the family cemetery in Little Mud Lick. He was found to be tall and stout, and he had blue eyes and dark-colored hair. He signed his name "Mack Donal Blanton."

According to Kentucky marriage records, Mattie J. Conley (b. 1899, age 74) married Mack D. Blanton (b. 1891, age 82) on January 3, 1973 in Martin County.

According to his death certificate, W.R. Rice died June 17, 1952 in Sitka from an enlarged heart. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Johnson County, his birthdate as May 21, 1875, his marital status as married, his occupation as farmer, his parents as Wall Rice and Sis Butler, and the informant as "son John Rice."

According to his obituary, Will R. Rice (age 77), son of Mr. and Mrs. Wall Rice, was a farmer, carpenter, and a minister of the Enterprise Baptist Church for 50 years. He was born May 21, 1875 in Johnson County, died June 17, 1952 in Sitka following an illness of one year, and was buried in Butler Cemetery in Little Mud Lick. He was survived by his wife, Edna Picklesimer Rice; 3 sons, J.B. Rice (of Sitka), Charles C. Rice (Urbana, Ohio), and John W. Rice (Paintsville); 3 daughters, Mrs. Edna Fraley (Ypsilanti, Michigan), Mrs. Mildred Fraley (Thealka, Kentucky), and Mrs. Gene Preston (Meally, Kentucky); and one sister, Mrs. Ketty Estep (Georges Creek). According to her obituary, Edna Picklesimer Rice (age 82), daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth Picklesimer, was born February 12, 1891 in Johnson County, died July 25, 1975 following a brief illness, and was buried in Butler Cemetery in Staffordsville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Will Rice. She was survived by two sons, John Rice (of Brooksville, Kentucky) and Charles Rice (Mechanicsburg, Ohio); one daughter, Jean Cutlip (Fairborn); 1 step-son, J.B. Rice (Sitka); 1 step-daughter, Edna Fraley (Michigan); 2 sisters, Rosa Tipton (Springfield, Missouri) and Margarett Melvin (Springfield, Missouri); 5 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Notes: When Louis Cabell Cocke's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Carroll County, Virginia, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer in Carroll County, that his nearest relative was Louisa Cathern Cocke, and that his birthdate was September 1, 1876. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had black eyes and gray hair.

On page 36 of the 1900 census for District 7 (Piper Gap) in Carroll County, Virginia (dated July 2, 1900), Lewis Cocke is listed as the head of the household for house #340, he's a farmer, born in September of 1875 in Virginia, parents born in Virginia, married for 2 years, and he's 25 years old. Also listed is Loisa C. (wife, born in December of 1879 in Virginia, parents born in Virginia, she's given birth to 1 child and that child is no longer living, age 20).

On page 12 of the 1910 census for District 10 (Pipers Gap) in Carroll County, Virginia (dated April 26, 1910), Lewis C. Cocke is listed as the head of the household for house #108, he's a farmer, born in Virginia, parents born in Virginia, 1st marriage, married for 11 years, and he's 33 years old. Also listed are Luiza C. (wife, born in Virginia, parents born in Virginia, 1st marriage, she's given birth to 3 children and 2 are still living, age 30), Lena M.
