SAMUEL BENNETT III, son of SAMUEL BENNETT II and SARAH FORSMAN, was born September 24, 1690 in Coventry, Rhode Island. He married MARY STAFFORD, daughter of AMOS STAFFORD and MARY BURLINGAME, on July 15, 1716 in Rhode Island. She was born September 21, 1694 in Warwick, Rhode Island.

Notes: According to the book "The Bennett, Bently and Beers Families" by S. B. Bennett (1899):

"It will be observed in passing that Samuel (I) who died in 1684, left a widow who married Moses Forsman. Samuel (2) married January 2, 1689, Sarah Forsman, who died in 1705. In 1690, their first child Samuel (3) was born. No record of this Samuel's issue exists, so far as known. It is fairly certain that he became the father of Ephraim, sr., for three reasons:

"First - Names were faithfully handed down in those old families, and we know Ephraim, jr.'s first born was named Samuel.

"Second - Granting that Ephraim, sr., was son to Samuel (3) it provides the generation between the above and the correctly recorded birth of Ephraim, jr., in 1762.

"Third - The writer's father told him that his great grandmother was a Forsman, and this being so, we would find Sarah Forsman the grandmother of Ephraim, sr. A simple error of tradition but a strong corroboration in fact, as it places a Forsman in the line of descent.

"Thus it will be seen that while it is not absolutely proven, it is much more than probable that Samuel (I) of Edward of Weymouth, is our first American ancestor."

The children of SAMUEL BENNETT and MARY STAFFORD are:

    1. THADDEUS BENNETT.
    2. EPHRAIM BENNETT, b. April 30, 1741, Rhode Island, d. October 26, 1813, Dix, New York, m. MARY JANE STAFFORD.

EPHRAIM BENNETT, son of SAMUEL BENNETT III and MARY STAFFORD, was born April 30, 1741 in Rhode Island, died October 26, 1813 in Dix, New York, and is buried in Watkins Glen, New York. He married MARY JANE STAFFORD about 1758.

Notes: According to the book "The Bennett, Bently and Beers Families" by S. B. Bennett (1899):

"Ephraim (4) married Mary Stafford. The family traditions here diverge; some believing him to have gone with David, at Urbana, others with Joseph in Ohio.

"Just before the Revolutionary war, with his family he went from Providence, R. I., to Goshen, Orange county, N. Y., on his way to the Wyoming valley, 'being induced to this removal by favorable reports from friends and relatives already there.' The war beginning they remained near Goshen until its close, then going to near Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

"Ephraim's (4) family consisted certainly of Ephraim (5), James, Thaddeus, Thomas, Abraham, David and Johathan, or Joseph. They settled at Wellsburg, N. Y. Later Ephraim (4) removed with Joseph to the state of Ohio where his descendants now are."

The children of EPHRAIM BENNETT and MARY JANE STAFFORD are:

    1. THADDEUS BENNETT, b. May 9, 1760, Warwick, Rhode Island, d. February 9, 1834, Scioto County, Ohio, m. (1) SHEBA EUNICE BENTLEY, m. (2) ELIZABETH (unknown last name), m. (3) RACHAEL CHENEY.
    2. EPHRAIM BENNETT II, b. May 1, 1762, Litchfield, Connecticut, d. October 26, 1843, Montour Falls, Schuyler County, New York, m. HANNAH BENTLEY.
    3. JAMES BENNETT, b. 1764, Warwick, Rhode Island.
    4. THOMAS BENNETT, b. 1768.
    5. ABRAHAM BENNETT.
    6. DAVID BENNETT.

A mountain man and owning no slaves, he nevertheless was one of the first to volunteer. It was not slavery, however, that he sought to uphold, but the principle of States Rights. He was a Democrat then as I am a Democrat now.

"The Allens have ever affiliated with the party of Jefferson, Jackson and Cleveland.

"Long before the beginning of the war my father married Miss Nancy Combs, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs William Combs, of Carroll county, and seven children had been born to them when the war began. My mother came of a family noted for longevity, her father having been more than one hundred years old at the time of his death.

JAMES J. CONLEY, son of EDMOND D. CONLEY III and ELIZABETH MCCARTY, was born about 1848 in Kentucky. He married LOUISA JACKSON. She was born about 1853 in Kentucky.

Notes: The book "The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky", published and sold by The Magoffin County Historical Society, says this about James on page 26: "James J. Conley b. 1849 died at a young age, buried in the Blanton/Conley Cem. No record of marriage or children." The book doesn't have the James J. Conley, or anyone in his family, that's found living next to Edmond Conley III in 1880 - and was born about 1848 - listed at all. This James will be listed as the son of Edmond Conley III here.

Louisa Jackson's name was determined by finding the 1925 census for Yell in Boone County, Iowa. Her son David is living there and the transcripts list his parents as James Conley and Louisa Jackson.

James Conley can't be found for sure in the census reports after 1880. There is a James Conley that is about the correct age that is found in the Western Kentucky Asylum for the Insane in Christian County, Kentucky, in 1900. It has him listed as being single, born in 1851 in Kentucky, and 49 years old. His parents birthplaces are listed as unknown. In 1910 he's in the same hospital and is listed as a 60-year-old single farmer, born in Kentucky. His parents birthplaces are still listed as unknown. In 1920 the hospital is now called Western State Hospital and James is a 69-year-old patient and his parents are listed as being born in the U.S. On this James' death certificate, it lists his cause of death as exhaustion due to chronic insanity. He died October 18, 1923 in the hospital. The certificate says that he was born in 1852 in Kentucky and his parents are unknown. This may or may not be the James being researched here, but this information will be posted for future reference.

On page 16 of the 1880 census for District 126 (Precinct 8 - State Road Fork) in Magoffin County, Kentucky (dated June 12, 1880), James J. Conley is listed as the head of the household for house #125, he's a farmer, born in Kentucky, father born in Kentucky, mother born in Virginia, and he's 31 years old. Also listed are Louisa (wife, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, age 27), Ananymous (son, born in Kentucky, age 7), Elizabeth (daughter, born in Kentucky, age 4), and David (son, born in Kentucky, age 2).
