MARY JANE FAIRCHILD, daughter of SHADRACH FAIRCHILD and SARAH HANNAH, was born in August of 1847 in Jennies Creek, Johnson County, Kentucky, and died before 1910. She married DANIEL M. SPRADLIN, son of JOSIAH SPRADLIN and JANE M. MAY, December 6, 1867 in Johnson County, Kentucky. He was born September 30, 1841 in Kentucky, and died December 12, 1914 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky.

Notes: Information on this family can be found on pages 367 & 494 of "The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky," published and sold by The Magoffin County Historical Society. According to that book (Volume II), Mary Jane Fairchild and Daniel Spradlin had no children of their own, but raised two orphans, John Quincy Adams and Charity Adams. They were the children of William Adams (1851-1887) and his 2nd wife, Rachel Baldwin (1852-1883). John Quincy Adams became a school teacher and married Jincy Lou Caudill, daughter of Elizabeth Spradlin and William Benjamin Caudill. He died of tuberculosis in 1904. Charity Adams married George B. Adams.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, Daniel M. Spradlin married Mary Jane Fairchild on December 6, 1867 in Johnson County.

According to his death certificate, Daniel M. Spradlin died December 12, 1914 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, from jaundice due to liver disease. She married WILLIAM ROGERS CASTLE, son of JEFFERSON CASTLE and MARY M. MEADOWS, about 1908. He was born January 7, 1882 in Kentucky, died November 29, 1947 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Castle Cemetery in Nippa, Johnson County, Kentucky.

Notes: William Rogers Castle was the brother of Martha Castle.

He was found to be of medium height and stout build, and he had brown eyes and black hair.

According to her obituary, Emma Johnson Castle (age 91), daughter of the late George and Lyelia Fairchild Johnson, was born December 10, 1883 in Johnson County, died July 6, 1975 in Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington, and was buried in Fairchild Cemetery in Denver. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. W. R. Castle. She was survived by 1 daughter, Mrs. Lyle Phelps (of Lexington); 1 brother, Alfred Johnson (Paintsville); and 1 sister, Mrs. W. H. When Wilford Alexander Johnson's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a telographer for Cumberland Pipe Line Company in Leander, Johnson County, that his closest relative was Dortha C. Johnson of Paintsville, and that he was born September 14, 1885. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had blue eyes and light brown hair.

According to his obituary, Wilford Johnson (age 83), son of George M. Johnson, former superintendent of Johnson County Schools, and Lidia Margaret Fairchilds Johnson, a direct descendant of Revolutionary War soldier Abuid Fairchilds, was a teacher, a telegraph operator for N & W Railroad, and then worked for the Internal Revenue Service until retirement. He owned a large farm in Jett, Franklin County, where he lived after retiring. He died December 8, 1968 in a Louisville hospital. He was survived by his wife, Dora Egbert Johnson; 1 son, Raymond Johnson (of Louisville); 4 daughters, Marie Johnson (Louisville), Louella Bassett (Long Island, New York), Elizabeth Sefner (Deposit, New York), and Lydia M. Johnson (McComb, Illinois); 1 brother, Alfred H. Johnson (Paintsville); and 2 sisters, Mrs. Emma Castle (Paintsville) and Laura Young (Pomona, California). "Alfred Johnson, 86, died Saturday, November 12, in Paintsville Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Johnson was born in Johnson County, February 14, 1891, the son of George M. and Lydia Fairchild Johnson. He was a resident of Paintsville, a retired teacher from the Johnson County school system, where he served as superintendent in 1934, and a member of the Methodist Church. His wife, Louella Egbert Johnson preceded him in death in 1972. Surviving are a son, Dr. Carlton Johnson of Columbus; a daughter, Virginia Vaughn of Norfolk, VA; a sister, Mrs. W. H. Young of Pomona, CA; and 7 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, November 14, in the Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ellis Hamilton officiating. Burial was in Johnson Family cemetery at Denver with Preston Funeral Home handling arrangements. Paintsville Herald, Wednesday, November 16, 1977."

"Alfred Holbrook Johnson was born February 14, 1891 at Oil Springs. He was an old time mountain fiddler, some one said he could make a fiddle talk. He was a cabinet maker and for ten years was a Union carpenter at Portsmouth, OH. He was a farmer and school teacher. He graduated at the University of Kentucky in 1915, and attended Berea College and Ohio State University. He taught high schools in Ohio and Kentucky. As Superintendent of the Johnson County Schools he bought the first school buses in the County and by paying $1500 each saved the County $25,000 a year tuition for high school students at Paintsville and Van Lear, $18,000 at Paintsville and $7,000 at Van Lear. He built the stone gyms at Oil Springs and Meade and built three rooms at Oil Springs and four rooms at Meade, all with WPA money and without cost to the county. He had the first attendance officer and the first free textbooks in Johnson County. He would have built a stone high school building in Ray Turner’s bottom if the County Board would have voted money for the site, but it absolutely refused and thereby lost a million dollars on a stone high school and good for a thousand years. He begged his successor, John Fred Williams, while he could get WPA money to build the high school, but he refused, saying people would not vote for any one wanting a county high school. He has two children, Virginia Vaughn, who is a high school teacher in Norfolk, VA and Carlton Johnson, Professor of Agricultural Engineering at the Ohio State University. He was a member of the First Methodist Church. His mother was Lydia Margaret Fairchild, daughter of Shadrach Fairchild. Shadrach Fairchild’s mother was the daughter of Captain Conley, who fought in the Revolutionary War. Shadrach Fairchild’s father was Asa Fairchild, whose father was Abiud Fairchild, who twice enlisted in the American army in the Revolutionary War. Alfred Johnson’s father was George M. Johnson, for eight years superintendent of the Johnson County schools. His grandfather was William H. Johnson, who fought four years in the Union Army in the Civil War. His grandmother was Sarah Washington, cousin of George Washington. He married Louella Egbert, daughter of Daniel Egbert, eight years county commissioner of Scioto County, OH. His name is on the name plate of the big bridge over Scioto River at Portsmouth. The name of the first king of England was EGBERT. He will be buried in the Shadrach Fairchilds Cemetery below Denver. Paintsville Herald, Wednesday, November 23, 1977."

In that book it says that John Henry Rice was born October 28, 1845, and married Mary A. May, daughter of David May. Their children were Emma Rice, Hallock J. Rice, Sheridan Rice, Nannie Rice, and Frank Rice. It also says that "All of these children lived to be about twenty-five years of age, and died unmarried between the ages of twenty-five and thirty. Mr. and Mrs. Rice lived several years after the death of their children."

Notes: Benjamin Hammond reportedly was first married to a lady by the name of Esther May, daughter of James and Mary "Polly" May. According to Kentucky death records, there was an Esther Hammon who was a farmer's wife in Morgan County and died there December 20, 1856 from consumption. She was the daughter of James and Polly May and was 23 years old. If she was the wife of Benjamin, then that would make the oldest child in this family, Mary Ann, her daughter. In the 1900 census, Mary Caudill Hammond says that she had given birth to 10 children and 9 were still living. There are a total of 12 children listed here because they appear in the different census reports as children of Ben.

He married (2) MARY S. (unknown last name) about 1903. She was born about 1860 in Kentucky.

She was born October 26, 1868 in Hager Hill, Johnson County, Kentucky, died September 30, 1942 in Sitka, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Swamp Branch, Johnson County, Kentucky. Maude May married (1) SAMUEL J. CUNNINGHAM July 17, 1887 in Johnson County, Kentucky. He was born about 1862. She married (2) (unknown first name) ROBINSON.

When Harlan Rice's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer in Riceville, Johnson County, that his closest relative was Mrs. Maud Rice of Riceville, and that he was born March 4, 1873. He was found to be tall, of medium build, and he had blue eyes and red hair.

According to his death certificate, Harlan Rice died November 25, 1935 in Riceville, Johnson County, Kentucky, from pneumonia. In addition to the children she is survived by the following brothers and sisters; Mrs. Sola Rice, Sitka; Mrs. Stella Spradlin and Mr. Heber Conley, Paintsville; Mr. John Conley, Lexington; Mrs. May Sherman, Thealka, and Mrs. Virgie Steels, Newark, NJ Mrs. Rice became ill while here on a visit to her sister about three weeks ago." Stone is listed as the head of the household for house #318, he's a grocer, single, born in Kentucky, he's living in the same house that he was in 1935, he has 3 years of college, and he's 56 years old. Also listed are Malcolm B. (brother, widowed, grocer, born in Kentucky, he's living in the same house that he was in 1935, 1 year of college, age 53), Maltie V. HARRY B. RICE, son of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN RICE and EMILY J. MAY, was born June 30, 1890 in Riceville, Johnson County, Kentucky, died in October of 1976 in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan, and is buried in Cook's Prairie Cemetery in Clarendon, Calhoun County, Michigan. He married CHLOE MAY, daughter of JOHN MARTIN MAY and CALADONIA COLLINS. She was born October 18, 1900 in Johnson County, Kentucky, and died in April of 1966 in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan, and is buried in Cook's Prairie Cemetery in Clarendon, Calhoun County, Michigan.

Notes: Chloe May was the sister of Curtis James May, as is shown in his obituary. Her name is listed as Flora in the 1910 census.

When Harry Rice's World War I draft registration card was filled out on June 5, 1917 in Johnson County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a farmer working for his father, that he was married and had a dependent father, mother, and wife, and that he was born June 30, 1890 in Riceville, Kentucky. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had brown eyes and brown hair.

A photo of Harry B. and Chloe May Rice's headstone in Cook's Prairie Cemetery in Clarendon, Calhoun County, Michigan, shows that Harry lived from 1890 to 1976, and Chloe from 1900 to 1966.

According to Social Security death record transcripts, Harry Rice was born June 30, 1890, and died in October of 1976. He received his Social Security card prior to 1951 in Ohio, and his last place of residence was in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan.
