She was born July 18, 1876 in Johnson County, Kentucky, died April 16, 1955 in Denver, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Spradlin Cemetery in Denver, Johnson County, Kentucky.

According to that book Charity Adams and her brother John were raised by Mary Jane Fairchild and Daniel Spradlin after their parents died.

Charity Adams was the sister of George Washington Adams, and of John Quincy Adams, who married Jincy Lou Caudill, daughter of Elizabeth Spradlin and William Benjamin Caudill. George and Charity had 3 sons that married into the Jesse and Cynthia Blair Arms family.

She married SAMUEL JACKSON MAY, son of DAVID MAY and NANCY POWERS, February 7, 1874 in Johnson County, Kentucky. He was born August 14, 1852 in Floyd County, Kentucky, died August 12, 1911 in Lakeville, Magoffin County, Kentucky, and is buried in S. J. Cemetery in Lakeville, Magoffin County, Kentucky.

In that book it says that Nancy Rice was born December 5, 1851, and married Samuel Jackson May, son of David of Salyersville. Their children were E. Dee May (who married Louise Wheeler), Sola May (married a Day), Frank May (married Roslie Preston), Fred May (married a Harrod), Mintie May (married a Cooper), Laura May (married a Salyer), and Samuel J. May Jr.

Samuel J. May was the brother of Malissa Jane May, Clarinda May, Mary Ann "Polly Ann" May, Thomas Green May, and Emily J. May.

When Warren Prentiss Jackson's World War II draft registration card was filled out on April 25, 1942 in Pike County, Ohio, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer in Piketon, Pike County, Ohio, that the person who would always know his address was Laura Jackson of Piketon, and that he was born June 28, 1895 in McCaughlin [sic] County, Kentucky. He was found to be 67 inches tall, he weighed 160 pounds, and he had blue eyes, brown hair, and a ruddy complexion.

HENRY HARMON RICE, son of PHOEBE FAIRCHILD and ANDREW JACKSON "BLACK JACK" RICE, was born June 14, 1854 in Johnson County, Kentucky, died October 26, 1944 in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky, and is buried in Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky. He married NANCY JANE KENDRICK, daughter of JOHN HACKWORTH and MARY KENDRICK, about 1879. She was born November 7, 1854 in Floyd County, Kentucky, died May 25, 1937 in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky, and is buried in Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky.

Information on this family can also be found on page 498 of the book "Johnson County, Kentucky: A History of the County, and Genealogy of Its People Up to the Year 1927" by Mitchell Hall. In that book it says that "Mr. and Mrs. Rice lived for a number of years on a farm where Dick Rice now resides on Jennie's Creek in Johnson County. They afterwards moved to Potters in Boyd County, where they now make their home (address R.F.D. No. 1, Ashland, Kentucky). They have a nice farm, located on the Midland Trail. Mr. Rice is a prominent minister of the Missionary Baptist Church and does much to advance the faith and increase the membership of his church."

Nancy Jane Kendrick was the sister of James F. Hackworth and Newton Henry Hackworth.

She married MALCOLM RICE, son of CHARLES L. RICE and NANCY A. WEBB, October 15, 1919. He was born March 12, 1880 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, died September 3, 1927 in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky, and is buried in Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky.

     "Calla Lee Rice was born March 18, 1882, and October 15, 1919, recorded the termination of a friendship begun in childhood when she was married to Malcolm Rice. Captain Malcolm Rice served for twenty-seven years in the United States Army, a part of this time being in action. He served on the Mexican Border, and fought with the famous First Division during the World War, and was in several major battles, for which he was decorated by the American and foreign governments because of bravery in action. (See the chapter on "Service Men" included in section one.) He remained in the service after the war and was stationed at several camps, one of which was at Fort Benning, Georgia. In 1925 he was transferred by the government for duty with the National Guard, and located at Winchester, Kentucky, where he and Mrs. Rice lived at the time of the Captain's death, September 4, 1927. They were on their way to visit relatives in Johnson County when Captain Rice was stricken and rushed to a hospital in Ashland for an intestinal operation from which he never rallied. He was buried near the home of his father-in-law at Summit. He and Mrs. Rice had no children, but they reared a niece, Genoa, who was a daughter of his sister Mary."

From the Military Times website:

"The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Malcolm Rice, United States Army, for extrordinary heroism in action while serving with 16th infantry Regiment, 1st Division, A.E.F., near Exermont, France, October 1 - 8, 1918. During the advance of October 1 - 8, Captain Rice was severely gassed and although suffering greatly from the effects, he remained with his company for four days, after which he was forced to evacuate on account of temporary blindness."

According to U.S. Army enlistment records, Malcolm Rice enlisted for the 3rd time on March 22, 1904 in Huntington, West Virginia, having been previously discharged May 21, 1907. He was born in Johnson County, and he was a farmer with blue eyes and dark brown hair. He was discharged March 26, 1907 in Santiago, Cuba. He was in the 11th infantry of Company A. A 1907 enlistment record shows that he enlisted March 22, 1907 in Santiago, Cuba, and was discharged March 21, 1910 in Fort D. A Russell in Wyoming. Another shows that he enlisted again March 22, 1910 in Fort D. A. Russell - his 5th enlistment - and was discharged March 21, 1913 in Camp at Texas City, Texas.

A photo of their headstone shows that Malcolm Rice D.S.C lived from 1880 to 1927, and that Calla Lee Rice from 1882 to 1939. It is also inscribed "Soldier Rest Thy Work Is Done."

According to her death certificate, Calla Lee Rice died July 20, 1939 in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky, from cancer [possibly of the uterus - hard to read] and pulmonary tuberculosis. Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Johnson County, her birth date as March 18, 1882, her marital status as widowed, her husband as Capt. Malcolm Rice, her parents as H. H. Rice (b. Johnson County) and Nancy J. Hackworth (b. Floyd County), the informant as J. T. Rice [brother Jake] of Ashland, and the burial place as Ashland Cemetery.

According to his death certificate, Capt. Malcolm Rice died September 3, 1927 in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky, from general peritonitis caused by an ulcer. When Hiram McClellen Vanover's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Pineville, Wyoming County, West Virginia, he stated that he was a store manager working for H. C. Vanover in Mullens, Wyoming County, that his closest relative was Fanny Vanover of Mullens, and that he was born May 6, 1879. He was found to be tall, of medium build, and he had blue eyes and black hair.

He was born February 10, 1883 in Kentucky, died February 17, 1975 in West Virginia, and is buried in Kavanaugh Chapel Cemetery in Kavanaugh, Boyd County, Kentucky

Notes: Information on this family can be found on page 498 of the book "Johnson County, Kentucky: A History of the County, and Genealogy of Its People Up to the Year 1927" by Mitchell Hall. In that book it says that Fannie Marie Rice was born March 1, 1895 in Johnson County, and married Allen H. Turman on April 1, 1925. He was a school teacher and they lived in Boyd County, Kentucky.

In that book it says that Elizabeth Rice was born May 19, 1862, and married James Howes, son of Wiley Howes of Salyersville.
