Their children were Bernadette Connelly (b. 1875) and Dr. Walter Constantine Connelly (b. 1879). His second wife was Sarah Atlanta Fife, whom he married January 13, 1885 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Information on this family can also be found on page 147 of the book "The Founding of Harman's Station" by William Elsey Connelley. In that book it says:

"William Elsey. Born on the Wolf Pen Branch, Johnson County, Kentucky, March 15, 1855. The name 'Elsey' was given to me by my mother for an old Virginia family with whom her family was connected by blood, but in what degree I do not know. The Sweatnam and Litteral families of Eastern Kentucky are also connected with this old Virginia family. I remember many things which occured at the home of my birth, one of which I will relate. There was some game then, and my father was an expert hunter. There was an immense turkey in the forest about our home that had often been shot at by the old hunters, but he was so wary that all the shots had to be from long distances, and he had always escaped. One evening, at dusk, my father came in from a hunt, and I heard him tell my mother that the big turkey had just flown into the top of a large poplar that stood at the back of our fields, there to roost for the night. He said he would go out there at daylight and try to get a shot at him. I immediately set up an outcry to be taken along, which was finally, at my mother's solicitation, agreed to. I remember that it was not light when we set out, but the distance was not more than a quarter of a mile. I was left at the fence, beyond which there was a thicket in which the big poplar grew. I could see the turkey outlined against the sky, and he was stretching his neck downward as far as he could, apparently seeking a place to fly down to, for it was dark below. My father must have seen that the turkey was intent on flying down, for he shot, as he said, before it was light enough to get a good 'bead' on him. But it was a lucky shot, though one that came near missing. The turkey's neck was shot in-two at the body. Here he came flopping down from the height of a hundred feet and fell in the thicket very near me. I remember with what pride my father carried him home and exhibited him to my mother. The parents of both my father and mother were invited to come to a dinner when he was roasted. I remember seeing my mother roasting the turkey in a large iron kettle used usually for laundry purposes. I am not sure I remember the weight of the turkey accurately, but thirty-nine pounds always seems to me to be the weight. While I have a perfect recollection of seeing the turkey cooked, I have none whatsoever of the dinner nor of either of my grandfathers or grandmothers, though I have been told all were present."

Information on this family can also be found on page 133 of the book "Johnson County, Kentucky: A History of the County, and Genealogy of Its People Up to the Year 1927" by Mitchell Hall. In that book it says that William Elsey Connelley was born March 15, 1855, married Julia F. Witten, and that their children were Bernadette Connelley (married James Coldiron) and Walter Constantine County (married Virgie Vincille first, married Mrs. Grace Bayes second). William's second wife was Sarah A. Fife and their children were Edith Louise Connelley and Edith M. Connelley (married A. W. Ross). It also says:

"William Elsey Connelley was principally self-educated. He taught school in Johnson County from 1872-1880 and in Wyandotte, Kansas, 1881-1882. He was county clerk of the last-named county from 1883-1887. From 1888-1892 he was in the wholesale lumber business at Springfield, Missouri. He was also interested in some banking houses, and all men's organizations. He later became connected with the Kansas State Historical Society as its secretary, since which time he was written many books some of which have been on Eastern Kentucky, as follows: 'Eastern Kentucky Papers,' 1910; 'The Founding of Harman's station and the Wiley Captivity' in 1910, and he assisted with the 'History of Kentucky' by Kerr, 1922. He has a valuable collection of the early settlers families in the Big Sandy Valley, and is now preparing a book on Eastern Kentucky. He also has a large collection of manuscripts relating to North American Indians, and subjects relating to Kentucky. In the founding of Harman Station he included the lineage of the early Conley family, from which much of the information contained herein was taken for which due acknowledgment is hereby given to Mr. Connelley. He is still secretary of the Kansas Historical Society and is located at Topeka."

     "Sir:
"In reply to your letter of yesterday, in which you request to be furnished with the record of service, including fourteen specified items of information, of Thomas Connelly of North or South Carolina, and Obed Fairchild of Virginia, in the Revolutionary War, I have the honor to advise you as follows:
"It appears from the official records that Thomas Connelly was a private of Captain Charles Lining's Company, in the 1st South Carolina Regiment, commanded by Colonel Charles C. Pinckney, in the Revolutionary War. His name appears on the rolls of that regiment for the period from November 1 to December 1, 1779, and from December 31, 1779 to January 31, 1760, but it has not been found on any other roll. The date and place of his enlistment and the date and mode of termination of his service are not known, nor has any information been found with regard to him additional to that which is given above.
"The name Obed Fairchild has not been found on any of the records on file in this office, of any organization that was in the military service during the War of the Revolution.
"It is proper to remark that the collection of Revolutionary records in the possession of this department is far from complete, and that the fact that the name of any particular person is not found therein should not be taken as conclusive evidence that military service was not rendered by such person. It is suggested that further information relative to the subject of your inquiry may be obtained from the States of South Carolina and Virginia, or, if pensions were ever granted on the account of the service of either of the men mentioned in your letter, a full statement of that service can doubtless be obtained from the Commissioner of Pensions, who is in charge of the pension records of all wars."

ANCESTOR'S SERVICE

" 'Any man shall be eligible to membership in this Society, who, being the age of twenty-one years or over, and a citizen of good repute in the community, is the lineal descendant of an ancestor, who was at all times unfalling in his loyalty to and rendered actual service in the cause of American Independence, either as an officer, soldier, seaman, marine, militiaman or minute man, in the armed forces of the Continental Congress or of any one of several Colonies or States; or as a Signer of the Declaration of Independence; or as a member of a Committee of Safety or Correspondence, or as a member of any Continental, Provincial, or Colonial Congress or Legislature; or as a civil officer either of one of the Colonies or States or of the national government; or as a recognized patriot, who performed actual service by overt acts of resistance to the authority of Great Britain.' - Constitution of National Society S. A. R., Article III, Section I, adopetd June 16, 1893.
"When the applicant derives eligibility of membership by descent from more than one ancestor, and it is desired to take advantage thereof, the history of each of said ancestor's services and the intermediate generations of the pedigree may all be written upon these pages; but it is desired that the history of each ancestor shall be written upon a seperate blank when possible.
"State fully such documentary or traditional authority as you found the following record upon, and also the residence of ancestors if known.
"My ancestor's services in assisting in the establishment of American Independence during the War of the Revolution were as follows:
"Thomas Connelley was also in the Revolutionary forces of North Carolina, but I have not been able to ascertain the nature of the services. He was born in South Carolina, near, or in Charleston, but went with his brother Harmon to North Carolina, where he lived at the time of the Revolution, and afterward, where he died. The family tradition of his services in South Carolina is, that being in Charleston on some business concerning some property belonging to himself and brother in that City, he enlisted for the defense of that City. This was in the winter of 1779-80. Before his business there was finished, the City of Charleston was threatened by the British. He promptly offered his services to his friend, Colonel Pinckney, who was his Attorney in the matter which had brought him to Charleston. This is confirmed, or seems to be, by the Certificate herewith enclosed from the Record and Pension Department. During the War of the Rebelion, all our family records were destroyed or lost. But I obtained the forgoing (and much about others of our family) from my Great Grandmother, Susan (Gians) Connelley, who died at the home of her son, Henry Connnelly, in Johnson County, Kentucky, in 1871, aged 99 years.
"Henry Connelly

"Was a Captain of Cavalry in the North Carolina Militia. He was the son of Thomas Connelly above mentioned. He came to Floyd County, Kentucky, with his two sons, Thomas and Edmund, from North Carolina, in 1800. Johnson County was afterward formed of this part of Floyd County. He made his home with his son Thomas and died at his house, about three miles above the present town of Paintsville, sometime abou 1740 [1840] at a very great age. I desire to take advantage of the eligibility to membership from Henry Connelly as well as from his father, Thomas Connelly. He was a pensioner, and his name can be found on Page 91 of Volume 3 of the Report of the Secretary of War in obedience to Resolution of the Senate of ___ and 30th of June 1834, in relation to the Pension Establishment printed in 1835. ___ under Floyd County, Kentucky."
"My father, and in fact most of my relatives in Johnson, Floyd, Magoffin and other Eastern Kentucky Counties now write the name Conley. This is the result of a desire to shorten the name, by Judge Hiram E. Conley, my father's cousin, now living at Paintsville, Kentucky. He induced most of our family to follow his example. This change was made about 1850, but I do not know the exact date. I made an effort to have them return to the original, but my father served in the Union Army, 45th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, and his name was there spelled Conley. He did not desire to change the orthgraphy of it on that accounty. When only a child ___ in desiring to return to the original form. I by some chance commenced writing it Connelley, using one E. more than I should on account of Deeds and Records made by me. I feel that I can hardly change it now. My father, Constantine Conley, lives now in East Point, Johnson County, Kentucky.
