Elizabeth Power was the sister of James Power. Her maiden name was confirmed by finding the birth record of a son. "Col Harris May" was born October 28, 1861 in Magoffin County to James May (b. Floyd County) and Elizabeth Power (b. Floyd County).

Notes: Joseph Eugene Conley of Paintsville, Kentucky, did the initial research that you'll find here. When asked how he knew that Nancy's maiden name was Rice, he said: "Nancy's maiden name was definitely Rice. I am looking at the register of Floyd Co. marriages even as I am typing this. While it does not list her parents as she was of age (at least 21) I am of the belief that she was the child of John Rice originally from Dover, England. John was killed in an Indian raid on or about Roanoake, Va. His eldest son, John II brought his family to Floyd (now Johnson) Co. between 1815-1818. He bought the Thomas Connelly (Capt. Henry's son) Farm at what is now Riceville, Ky. This farm is now the home of my parents. This is the only family of Rices in this area at the time and the Rice and Connelly families were quite intertwined. I have no concrete proof at this time, but I feel certain this is the lineage of Nancy Rice."

According to the book "The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky," published and sold by The Magoffin County Historical Society, under "Early Floyd County, Kentucky Marriages:," "HENRY CONLY m. Nancy Rice 30 Nov 1820 by Mason Williams. Bond signed by Henry & Edward Conly."

According to family tradition, Henry and Nancy had a child in between 1825 & 1830 in Virginia that died young, possibly at birth.

On Michael Nestor's Web site, Michael claims that Henry and Nancy were the parents of George Washington Conley, whom Michael calls Jacob Washington Conley.

On page 98 of the 1850 census for My District of Floyd County, Kentucky (dated August 28, 1850), Henry is listed as the head of the household for house #614, he's a farmer, born in North Carolina, and he's 55 years old. Also listed are Nancy (born in Virginia, age 50), David (born in Kentucky, age 12), James (born in Kentucky, age 11), and Susannah (born in Kentucky, age 2).

On page 60 of the 1860 census for Magoffin County, Kentucky (dated July 11, 1860), Henry is listed as the head of the household for house #410, he's a farmer, born in North Carolina, and he's 63 years old. Also listed are Mary (born in Virginia, age 58), David (farm laborer, born in Kentucky, age 21), James (school teacher, born in Kentucky, age 19), Susanah (born in Kentucky, age 12), William Salyer (born in Kentucky, age 14), Susanah (born in Kentucky, age 6).

On page 4 of the 1870 census for Precinct 1 in Magoffin County, Kentucky (dated August 12, 1870), Henry Conley, Sr. is listed as the head of the household for house #20, he's a farmer, born in Kentucky, can read and write, and he's 72 years old. He's living by himself 3 houses away from son David and 2 away from daughter Susanna and their families. It's unknown why he is listed as a "Sr." The transcripts list it as a "W" but it definitely looks like a "Sr."

Allen served in the Union Army during the Civil War.

According to Kentucky birth records, Minerva Jane Foster, daughter of Pleasant M. Foster and Evelina Gullett, was born February 19, 1858 in State Road Fork, Floyd County, Kentucky. According to Kentucky marriage records, Allen Penix married Susana Conley on November 19, 1863 in Magoffin County.

According to Kentucky marriage records, Allen Penix married Minerva Foster on December 31, 1887 in Magoffin County.

Also listed are David (son, born in Kentucky, age 23), and Maudie (daughter, born in Kentucky, age 10). Manerva gave birth to Cordelia in 1878 and, according to this census, she hasn't had any children since. It's unknown who the parents of Maudie are, although it's very possible that they are Allen and Manerva. More than likely, though, she's a granddaughter.

According to her death certificate, Eliza Whitt Conley died September 18, 1936 in Salyersville from hypertensive heart disease with cerebral apoplexy as a contributing factor. Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Virginia, her birthdate as February 9, 1867, her marital status as widow, her husband as John Conley, her parents as Henry Whitt (b. Virginia) and Matilda Dixon (b. Virginia), and the informant as Hester Conley of Salyerville, Kentucky.

Witnesses at Leonard Conley's first wedding were Wilbur Swift and John Conley. L.F. Caudill was the minister who officiated. Witnesses at the wedding with Cora Litteral Adams were Benjamin Franklin Prater and Garfield Conley. They were married at the home of J.J. Prater, "Minister of the Gospel."

According to his death certificate, J.L. Conley died September 10, 1942 in Mashfork from chronic nephritis. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Salyersville, his birthdate as April 8, 1873, his parents as Dave Conley (b. Magoffin County) and Mahala Hitchcock (b. Magoffin County), the informant as Cora Conley of Mashfork, and the doctor as B.R. Conley [Byron Richard Conley].

She was the seventh of eleven children, eight of which lived to adulthood. She was a tiny, barely five foot, but lovely girl with dark hair and laughing hazel eyes. She was active in her local church but could at times have a slightly wicked sense of humor, not naughty just quick.

"As she got older she decided to start making her own way so she started to work for her cousin Pearl and her husband Virgil at their tomato factory. After WWI Lucy decided to make the move to Ohio where her sister Louvenia, older by fifteen years, was a teacher. Louvenia and her husband Roscoe lived in the industrial town of Portsmouth, and Lucy thought she might be able to find a good position there. She was right, before long she had a position at the old Shelby Shoe Factory.

"Wardie Beecher Conley was born in Magoffin County, Kentucky on June 26, 1899, to Joseph Leonard Conley and Lydia (Caudill) Conley. He was a handsome boy with light brown hair and blue eyes. He was charming but a bit wild and reckless, maybe because his mother died in October of 1904 when he was just a boy of five. About four and a half years later great-grandpa J. L. married Cora Litteral Adams on 7 March 1909 when grandpa was just shy of ten.

"When Wardie was older on the occasional weekend he would go to a little town in Ohio, Sciotoville, to visit his uncle and cousins. After WWI on one of his visits he met a lovely young girl named Lucy Martin at a church social. He, I would say, was smitten for he started to go up every weekend to Ohio in his horse and buggy. Finally he decided to look for work and he found a position at a steel factory in Portsmouth."

Wardie Conley and Lucy Martin were married by William Lawhorn in Portsmouth, Ohio.

According to his death certificate, Wardie Conley died September 14, 1949 in Eubank from pulmonary tuberculosis. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as McGoffin, Kentucky, his birthdate as June 26, 1899, his marital status as married, his parents as Lenard Conley and Liddie Caudill, and the informant as Ruby Conley.

Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, he volunteered for service in the Union Army. He served as a hospital steward for most of the conflict. An often-told story concerning Dr. Isaac tells of a time when he was returning home from the battlefield. He came upon an encampment of Confederate soldiers. He turned his horse but not before he was spotted by the enemy soldiers. He galloped away, hanging from the side of the horse opposite the whizzing bullets.

He married (1) Verna Cooper, daughter of Boone and Talitha Davis Cooper, on June 6, 1906. He married (2) Bertha Conley Jackson on February 21, 1889.

When George Winfield Conley's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Magoffin County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer in Salyersville, Magoffin County, that his closest relative was Raymond Conley of Magoffin County, and that he was born April 29, 1883. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had blue eyes and brown hair.

When George W. Conley's World War II draft registration card was filled out on April 27, 1942 in Wellston, Jackson County, Ohio, he stated that he was employed by the B & O Railroad in Byers, Jackson County, Ohio, that his closest relative was Bertha Conley of Buyers, and that he was born April 29, 1883 in Magoffin County, Kentucky. He was found to be 5 feet 10 inches tall, he weighed 164 pounds, and he had blue eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion.

According to Ohio death record transcripts, George W. Conley was born about 1883, and died May 5, 1965 at home in Wellston at the age of 82. He was married at the time of his death.

According to her death certificate, Verna Cooper Conley died December 30, 1914 in State Road Fork from tuberculosis of the lungs. Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Magoffin County, her birthdate as March 30, 1886, her parents as D.B. Cooper (b. Magoffin County) and Telitha Davis (b. Cooper of Cyrus, Kentucky.

Notes: It's unknown at this time who Elizabeth Conley's parents were, but it could be the John and Sarah Conley who are living next to her in 1860.

Jeremiah Salyer was the brother of Henry Salyer and they were reportedly the sons of William Salyer and Martha Kilgore. They were living next to each other in 1850 and their uncle, Jacob Salyer, was living next to them as well.

According to information taken from the Magoffin County Historical Society's Web site, Elizabeth Conley and Jeremiah Salyer were married September 17, 1845 in Johnson County, Kentucky.

According to her death certificate, Amanda Conley Picklesimer died February 7, 1930 in Staffordsville from asthma complicated by broncho pneumonia. Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Kentucky, her age as 60 years 7 months 8 days, her marital status as married, her husband as I.J. Picklesimer, and her parents as Zair Conley (b. Kentucky) and Mary An Mayhan (b. Kentucky).

According to his death certificate, I.J. Pickle Simer died May 21, 1930 in Staffordsville from senility. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Kentucky, his birthdate as July 16, 1860, his marital status as married, his occupation as minister, his parents as Sam Pickle Simer (b. Kentucky) and Phoebe Rice (b. Kentucky).

According to his obituary, "'Aged Man Victim of Acute Indigestion' J. (Bud) Picklesimer, age 70, died suddenly at his home at Staffordsville of acute indigestion. Mr. Picklesimer had been in his usual good health and died in one hour following a hearty meal. Mr. Picklesimer was one of the county’s best citizens and a member of the United Baptist Church. Besides his widow he is survived by the following children: Albert Picklesimer, of Win Ky.; Sherman Picklesimer and Manford Picklesimer, of Van Lear; Jim Picklesimer, Win; Farmer Picklesimer, Staffordsville; Elbert Picklesimer, Van Lear, and Mrs. Tera Williams of Morgan county. Funeral services were in charge of ministers of the United Baptist Church with burial in the family burying ground."
