Oscar Conley and Agnes Allen were my grandparents and both died when I was young. I barely remember my grandmother. I remember that she lost a leg to diabetes and can still see her face in my memories but I don't remember much else. Most of the things that I know about her I've learned through stories that I've been told. I know that she must've been a very strong woman to have 15 children - 13 that made it to adulthood.

I have more memories of my grandfather. He lived in a trailer behind my parents' house after my grandmother died, so I was lucky enough to get to see quite a bit of him. The year before he died he started a tradition of having a family reunion every year so that he could get all 13 of his surviving children together at the same time. This tradition continues to this day. For several years the family reunion was held at different places around California but it finally settled in at Three Rivers, California, which is right at the entrance to Sequoia National Park in the Sierra Nevada mountains in Central California. It's held on the weekend before Memorial Day each year and usually more than a hundred people show up. There's a golf tournament, horseshoe tournament, plenty of swimming and a lot of different things for the kids to do. In the evening there is a potluck-style dinner that's followed by home-made ice cream and then there's a raffle of all kinds of arts and crafts projects that family members make and donate. The money from the raffle goes towards items that are needed for the next year's reunion and it also goes towards graveside flowers and for emergency funds.

I have two great essays on this site that tell of life growing up in the family of Oscar Conley and Agnes Allen. They were written by two of their children and make for great reading. One is called In Memory and was written by my Aunt Doris. The other is called My Recollections and was written by my Uncle Dick.

When Oscar Conley's World War I draft registration card was filled out on June 5, 1917 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio, he stated that he was employed by the Excelsior Shoe Company in Portsmouth, and that he was born April 28, 1895 in Salyersville, Kentucky. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had blue eyes and dark brown hair.

They are living next to brother James Everett Conley. Oscar is renting his home.

Also listed are Agnes (wife, born in Ohio, father born in Kentucky, mother born in Ohio, first married at 18, age 32), Doris (daughter, born in Ohio, age 12), Theda (daughter, born in Oklahoma, age 11), Jack I. (son, born in Oklahoma, age 3), Lorene (daughter, born in Oklahoma, age 1), and Florene (daughter, born in Oklahoma, age 1). Oscar is renting his home for 15 dollars a month, and there is no radio set in this home.

On pages 27 & 28 of the 1940 census for District 80-14B (Lyons) in Rice County, Kansas (dated April 27, 1940), Oscar Conley is listed as the head of the household for house #320, he's a pumper in the oil fields, born in Kentucky, he was living in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1935, he has a 3rd grade education, and he's 44 years old. B. F. and Mary are buried at the mouth of the Adam's Hollow at the foot of Star Hill. They had 5 boys and 5 girls and it's said that 5 were left-handed and 5 were right-handed.
