He married LOLA L. BLAIR, daughter of NANCY CAROLINE CONLEY and JOHN HENRY BLAIR, June 12, 1905. She was born May 1, 1890 in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky, died October 25, 1959 in Van Lear, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Castle Cemetery in Busseyville, Lawrence County, Kentucky.

Notes: Samuel Hughes' brother, Eugene, married Lola Blair's sister, Rosie.

When Samuel George Hughes' World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Lawrence County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer in Busseyville, Lawrence County, Kentucky, that his closest relative was Mrs. Lola Hughes of Busseyville, and that he was born March 22, 1883. He was found to be tall and slender, and he had blue eyes and brown hair. Not being able to read or write, he signed the card with an "X."

According to his obituary, George Hughes (age 72), son of the late Samuel and Evaline Conley Hughes, was a resident of Van Lear for 24 years prior to his death. He was born March 22, 1883 in Lawrence County, died December 12, 1955 in a Lexington hospital after an illness of 5 years, and was buried in the family cemetery in Busseyville. He was survived by his wife, Lula Blair Hughes; 4 sons, D. C. Hughes (of Dehue, West Virginia), Ollie Hughes (Dayton, Ohio), and Roy Hughes (Van Lear) [the 4th son isn't listed]; and 2 sisters, Mrs. Arvie Childers (Loula, Kentucky) and Mrs. Mary E. In that book it says that John Conley married Margaret Blair, daughter of Noble Blair, and that their children were James Hayden Conley (married Cynthia Ellen Rice), John "Pippins" Conley, Thomas Conley, William Conley, H. Burns Conley of Hager Hill, Mart V. Conley, Amanda Conley, "?" Conley, "Sis" Conley, Hiram Conley, and Julia Conley (married Lewis Christian). On page 676, under Floyd County Marriages, it says that John Conley married "Mary" Blair on March 14, 1839.

He married (1) REBECCA JANE PRESTON on November 30, 1882 in Johnson County, Kentucky. She was born in November of 1861 in Kentucky, and died before 1930. He married (2) PHOEBE JANE (unknown last name), about 1928. She was born about 1871 in Kentucky.

Although there is no absolute proof, Rebecca Preston was probably the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Castle Preston. They can be found in the 1860 census, a year before Rebecca was born, but in 1870 Elizabeth is found - apparently widowed - living with one of her daughters in the home of a Fred Murry family, and her other children are found scattered around, living with different families. Rebecca is found living in the home of a Samuel S. Murray family. In 1880 Rebecca can be found living with her sister, Nancy. When David Leonard Kestner's World War II draft registration card was filled out on April 27, 1942 in Monticello, Piatt County, Illinois, he stated that he was self-employed, that his closest relative was Mrs. Margaret Kestner of Hammond, Illinois, and that he was born February 7, 1883 in Paintsville, Kentucky. He was found to be 5 feet 10 inches tall, he weighed 180 pounds, and he had blue eyes, gray hair, a light complexion, and he had 3 fingers missing on his right hand.

Information found on findagrave.com and a photo of their headstone shows that Margaret E. Kestner lived from 1883 to 1976, and was buried in Hammond Cemetery in Hammond, Piatt County, Illinois, and that David L. Kestner lived from 1883 to 1956, and was buried in the same cemetery.

Daniel Arms married (1) POLLY ANN RATLIFF about 1904. She was born about 1875 in Kentucky, and died August 7, 1914 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky.

In 1920 it's listed as Allie Arms. In her obituary, it's Allie Blair, and she's listed as the daughter of Watt Blair and Mary Alice Conley as opposed to Watt and Mary Conley Blair.

Information found on the Johnson County Historical Society's website shows that Mary Alice Conley Arms lived from April 1, 1889 to April 21, 1961, and was buried in Music-Hyden Cemetery in Hager Hill, and that Dan Arms lived from October 14, 1869 to October 11, 1943, and was buried in the same cemetery.

According to his obituary, Hershel Arms (age 69), son of Dan and Polly Ratliff Arms, was a C & O Railway employee. He was born July 18, 1909 in Johnson County, died January 8, 1979 in Paintsville, and was buried in the family cemetery in Kerz. She was born March 23, 1929 in Auxier, Kentucky, died June 20, 2006 in AmeriCare Living Center, and was buried in Center Grove Cemetery. She married Billie Eugene Conley on March 22, 1946. He died December 17, 1981. She was survived by 2 sons, Jerry (Tammy) Conley and Terry (Trisha) Conley (both of Wabash, Indiana); 1 daughter, Mrs. Marshal (Sherri) Blair (Wabash); 3 brothers, Douglas (Doreena) Perry (Dayton, Ohio), William (Gay) Perry (Columbus, Ohio), and Franklin (Cathy) Perry (Cardington, Ohio); 4 sisters, Jessie Pack (Dayton), Mrs. Charles (Darlene) McKenzie (Dayton), Demple Watkins (West Van Lear, Kentucky), and Mrs. John (Bonnie) Jurich (Englewood, Ohio); 4 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. SMITH W. CONLEY, son of HARVEY ELSWORTH BURNS CONLEY and REBECCA JANE PRESTON, was born October 15, 1895 in Hager Hill, Johnson County, Kentucky, and died in January of 1968 in Warsaw, Kosciusko County, Indiana. He married AMANDA M. BURCHWELL, daughter of GEORGE BURCHWELL and EMMA HATFIELD. She was born in February of 1891 in Kentucky.

Amanda Burchwell was the sister of Minnie Burchwell and Mahala Burchwell.

Smith and his brother Ervin married sisters.

When Smith Conley's World War I draft registration card was filled out on June 5, 1917 in Johnson County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a farmer employed by his father in Hager Hill, that he was single and had dependent parents, and that he was born October 15, 1895 in Hager Hill, Johnson County. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had light brown eyes and light brown hair.

According to Social Security death record transcripts, Smith Conley was born October 15, 1894, and died in January of 1968. He received his Social Security card prior to 1951 in Kentucky, and his last place of residence was in Warsaw, Kosciusko County, Indiana.

On page 10 of the 1900 census for District 32 (Dick Creek) in Floyd County, Kentucky (dated June 9, 1900), Geo. Birchwell is listed as the head of the household for house #78, he's a farmer, born in January of 1864 in Kentucky, parents born in Virginia, married for 17 years, and he's 36 years old. Also listed are Emma (wife, born in March of 1860 in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, married for 17 years, she's given birth to 9 children and 6 are still living, age 40), Martha L. (daughter, born in September of 1886 in Kentucky, age 13), Malcum (son, born in March of 1888 in Kentucky, age 12), Mandy (daughter, born in February of 1891 in Kentucky, age 9), Fannie (daughter, born in January of 1892 in Kentucky, age 8), Minnie (daughter, born in December of 1893 in Kentucky, age 6), and Haley [Mahala] (daughter, born in November of 1898 in Kentucky, age 1).

On page 14 of the 1920 census for District 85 (Scioto Township) in Jackson County, Ohio (dated January 21, 1920), Smith W. Conley is listed as the head of the household for house #157, he's a farmer, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, and he's 24 years old. Also listed are Manda M. (wife, born in Kentucky, father born in Virginia, mother born in Kentucky, age 25), and George E. (son, born in Kentucky, age 1 year 2 months).

On page 14 of the 1930 census for District 36-5 (Magisterial District No. 1) in Floyd County, Kentucky (dated April 1930), Smith Conley is listed as the head of the household for house #118, he's a coal miner, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, first married at age 22, and he's 34 years old. Also listed are Manda (wife, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, first married at 26, age 38), George E. (son, born in Kentucky, age 11), and Redman M. (son, born in Kentucky, age 4). They are living next to Smith's brother, Ervin.

On page 42 of the 1940 census for District 36-7 in Floyd County, Kentucky (dated April 25, 1940), Smith Conley is listed as the head of the household for house #344, he's a blacksmith in the coal mines, born in Kentucky, he's living in the same place that he was in 1935, he has a 6th grade education, and he's 45 years old. Also listed are Mandy (wife, born in Kentucky, 2nd grade education, age 39), Redman (son, born in Kentucky, age 14), Billie Spradlin (cousin, single, coal miner, born in Kentucky, he's living in the same place that he was in 1935, 8th grade education, age 26), and Bennie Spradlin (cousin, coal miner, born in Kentucky, he's living in the same place that he was in 1935, 6th grade education, age 24).

      Notes: According to her death certificate, Ernesteen Jane Conley died October 10, 1928 in Paintsville from general peritonitis following a ruptured appendix. Zilpha Blair is listed as the head of the household for house #115, she's a farm laborer, widowed, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, first married at age 20, and she's 47 years old. Also listed are Margie (daughter, widowed, not working, born in Kentucky, first married at 21, age 26), Tobie (son, single, farm laborer, born in Kentucky, age 22), Clourine [hard to read] (grandchild, female, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, age 3), and Frank Turk (boarder, widowed, not working, born in Ohio, parents born in Kentucky, first married at 22, age 35).
