Magoffin County, resident of Paintsville, age 35), son of Chat Montgomery and Catherine Montgomery, married Golda Vanhoose (widow, b. Lawrence County, resident of Paintsville, age 17), daughter of M.       According to his obituary found on the obituary page of the Johnson County Historical & Genealogical Society's website: "Mance Montgomery, Jr., three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Manse Montgomery, was burned to death Sunday morning at two o’clock when the Montgomery home on Turkey Knob was destroyed by fire. It was reported that three of the children were at home at the time the fire started and the eldest, 11 years of age, carried one of the children to safety, but was unable to reach the victim. The cause of the fire, which also destroyed the home of Alvin Van Hoose, was not determined according to Fire Chief John H. Cottle. Due to the fact that there is no water supply in this section, very little could be done by the local fire department, said Mr. Cottle. The booster tank on the fire truck contains only 70 gallons of water and this supply was used on the Montgomery residence in an effort to remove the body of the Montgomery child Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the graveside on Tutor Key by Rev. Scott Castle."

He married (1) CATHERINE MONTGOMERY on December 27, 1887 in Magoffin County, Kentucky. He married (2) (unknown). He married (3) MARGARET "PEGGY" HOWARD on November 30, 1909 in Magoffin County, Kentucky. He married (4) KATIE SELLARDS. She was born about 1878 in Kentucky. Margaret "Peggy" Howard married (1) WILLIAM RISNER.

Notes: Newell Chapman Montgomery's mother, Elizabeth Cantrell, and Catherine Montgomery's grandmother, Catherine Cantrell, were sisters.

Chat Mongomery's 2nd wife was reportedly Nora Griffith, daughter of Andy and Angeline Griffith. He's found living with that family in 1900. They reportedly had a daughter, Flora N. Montgomery, who married Wayne Hayden Conley Nothing could be found to prove this.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, N. C. Montgomery married Catherine Montgomery on December 27, 1887 in Magoffin County at the home of J. Montgomery. The witnesses were Cornelius Tackett and J. V. Howard, and the minister was William Jenkins.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, Chat Montgomery married Peggy Risner on November 30, 1909 in Magoffin County at the home of R. H. Murray. The witnesses were R. H. Murray and Clearance Risner, and the minister was A. O. Murray.

Information found on the Johnson County Historical Society's website and photos of their headstones (photo 2) shows that Catherine Collins lived from 1872 to September 8, 1946, and was buried in Turkey Knob Cemetery in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, and that Newell C. Montgomery lived from 1870 to November 10, 1946, and was buried in the same cemetery.

According to his death certificate, Newell Chapman Montgomery died November 10, 1946 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, from coronary heart disease. Mr. Rachowiak said he did not know he had hit the man until he stopped his car after feeling a bump. He was booked as a witness at an inquest but was released on his own recogniance. Sergeant Reed said complaints had been received shortly before the accident from motorist who said a man answering Mr. Spencer's description was walking in front of cars in that vinicity. Spencer a native of Johnson County, was the son of Dick and Recie Montgomery Spencer of Blackberry section of Paintsville. He was a veteran of World War II, having served two years in the European Theater. He was awarded the EAME Theatre Ribbons with two Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal. He was born March 27, 1875 in Elliott County, Kentucky, died January 27, 1959 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, and is buried in Cumbo Cemetery in West Van Lear, Johnson County, Kentucky.

Laura Conley's brother, William Lewis Conley, married Charles Friend's sister, Oma. Charles was also the brother of Elizabeth Friend and Laura Friend.

She was born July 3, 1918 in Salyersville, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Kindle and Florence Elizabeth (Phipps) Montgomery. On April 9, 1936 Mazie was united in marriage to Harlan Montgomery who preceded her in death on April 20, 1981.

Surviving are four sons: Emery Montgomery and wife Patty of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Emerson Montgomery and wife Lois of Waverly, William “Bill” Montgomery of Columbus, Ohio and Danny Montgomery and wife Debbie of Minford, Ohio; 7 daughters: Bonita Rigsby and husband Huey, Fronia Montgomery and husband Russell, Rose Gullett and husband Roby, Patricia Peters and husband Robert all of Waverly, Ruth Elders and husband Edward of Washington C.H., Ohio, Dorothy Pierce and husband Pete of Myrtle Beach and Barbara Johnson and husband Michael of Waverly; 29 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren; and a sister: Rurie Russell of Salyersville.

Mazie was a homemaker and a charter member of Little Vine Primitive Baptist Church.

Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday March 17, 2009 at the Boyer Funeral Home in Waverly with Elder Larry Stanley and Elder Jerry Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Little Vine Cemetery, Waverly.
