SARAH CONLEY was born about 1811 and died about 1840. She married DANIEL LITTERAL, son of JOHN LITTERAL and (unknown), about 1829. He was born about 1811 in Virginia. Daniel Litteral married (2) ELIZABETH BURKE about 1844. She was born about 1825 in Virginia.

Notes: The relationship of Sarah Conley to the Captain Henry Connelly branch is unknown at this time.

According to the book "The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky," published and sold by The Magoffin County Historical Society (page 546): "SARAH 'SALLIE' CONLEY m. Daniel Litteral, son of John Litteral (a veteran of the War of 1812. Sons of Daniel Litteral state that their parents names were Daniel and Sally Conley Litteral in the book Soldiers, Statesmen and Presidents printed in the 1890's. In Jenny Wiley Country, by C. Mitchell Hall, he states that Daniel Litteral was killed in his own yard during the Civil War on Paint Creek, Johnson Co. KY."

It also says that "Research has not identified who the parents of Sarah 'Sally' Conley may have been."

Daniel Litteral was reportedly the son of John Litteral and Elizabeth Rowland, was born about 1811 in Russell County, Virginia, and died about 1863 in Paint Creek, Magoffin County, Kentucky.

Elizabeth Burke [Burk] reportedly married a Hiram Davis after Daniel died.

The order of these children may not be completely accurate. It is pieced together using the census reports and "The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky." There is also another child that has been reported to be the child of Daniel and Elizabeth. Her name was Virginia and she was born in 1852.

From Ed Litteral of South Webster, Ohio:
"I ran across your web pages on the Litterals and Conley's (and this email address) while researching my great-great grandfather, Wiley Litteral (b. 1831). I don't know how interested in the Litterals you are but there was one detail I noticed in your mention of the 1850 census.
"From your text: 'On page 43 of the 1850 census for Johnson County, Kentucky (dated August 30, 1860), there is an Elizabeth Litterall listed as the head of the household for house #282, she's born in Virginia and 58 years old. Also listed are William (born in Kentucky, age 18), and Milton (born in Kentucky, age 16). They are living next to the Edmond Conley Sr. family. It's unknown if this Elizabeth (etc.) is related to Daniel Litteral, but this is the only William Litteral of this age found in this area in 1850, and the only Milton Litteral, as well. It could be that Daniel was married 3 times, with the 2nd and 3rd wives both named Elizabeth.'
"As far as the family history knows, Daniel was not married a third time to another Elizabeth. However we do believe the Elizabeth in this entry was indeed related to Daniel, but as his mother. When Daniel married Elizabeth Burke, he moved to McGlofflin or possibly Carter counties. We do know that Wiley (probably the William mentioned there) and his brother Milton stayed in Johnson Co. We have always assumed that the boys stayed with their widowed grandmother on her farm and the Elizabeth mentioned as head of household here was Elizabeth (Rowland), widow of John Litteral. The age and circumstances are correct anyway. Both Wiley and Milton had their own families and entries in the 1860 Census.
"My grandfather (1903-1994) remembered his grandparents Wiley and Rebecca (Pace) and told a few stories though he said that his grandfather didn't mention his father Daniel much. He said that growing up, they had neighbors that were Conleys and he was told that they were related but he could not remember how. Probably because his great grandmother Sara Conley had died in 1840, 63 years before he was born, and she was not in the family bible."

On page 39 of the 1830 census for Floyd County, Kentucky, there is a Daniel Literal listed as the head of the household that is probably this Daniel. In this house are 1 male and 1 female, both between 15 and 20 years old. This would be Daniel and Sarah.

On page 49 of the 1840 census for Floyd County, Kentucky, Daniel Litrel is listed as the head of the household and is living next to his father, John. In Daniel's house are 1 male under 5, 2 males between 5 & 10 [Milton & Wiley], 1 male between 20 and 30 [Daniel], and 2 females under 5 [Cynthia & Newcarus]. In John's house are 1 male between 50 & 60 and 1 female between 40 and 50. On page 43 of the 1850 census for Johnson County, Kentucky (dated August 30, 1860), there is an Elizabeth Litterall listed as the head of the household for house #282, she's born in Virginia and 58 years old. It could be that Daniel was married 3 times, with the 2nd and 3rd wives both named Elizabeth.

On pages 22 & 23 of the 1850 census for Morgan County, Kentucky (dated August 5, 1850), there is a Daniel Litrel listed as the head of the household for house #131, he's a farmer, born in Virginia, and he's 39 years old. Also listed are Elizabeth (born in Virginia, age 25), Cyntha (born in Kentucky, age 14), Newcarus [hard to read] (female, born in Kentucky, age 12), Hastin (born in Kentucky, age 4), Minyard [hard to read] (male, born in Kentucky, age 3), Samuel (born in Kentucky, age 2), and John (born in Kentucky, age 1).

On pages 204 & 205 of the 1860 census for Carter County, Kentucky (dated August 24, 1860), Dan Literel is listed as the head of the household for house #1463, he's a farmer, born in Kentucky, and he's 50 years old. Also listed are Elizabeth (born in Kentucky, age 30), Austin (born in Kentucky, age 15), Miniard (born in Kentucky, age 13), Samuel (born in Kentucky, age 10), John M. (born in Kentucky, age 6), Linsey P. (male, born in Kentucky, age 2), and Elliott (born in Kentucky, age 1 month).

The children of SARAH CONLEY and DANIEL LITTERAL are:

    1. WILEY LITTERAL, b. December 31, 1831, Kentucky, d. January 10, 1916, Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky, m. REBECCA JANE PACE.

    6. NEWCARUS LITTERAL, b. 1838, Kentucky.
    7. GILSON LITTERAL.

The children of DANIEL LITTERAL and ELIZABETH BURKE are:

    1. HAUSTEN LITTERAL, b. 1846, Kentucky.
Notes: Hausten's name could also have been Haustin, Houston or Harrison.
    2. MINYARD LITTERAL, b. July 1, 1848, Kentucky, d. November 9, 1923, Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky, buried in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky, m. MARY JANE ODLE.
    3. SAMUEL LITTERAL, b. 1848, Kentucky.
    4. JOHN M. LITTERAL, b. 1849, Kentucky.
Notes: In the 1850 census John is listed as being 1 year old and in the 1860 census John M. is 6 years old. It's unknown if the first John died young and they named another child John, or if there is an error in the 1860 census.
    5. LINDSEY P. LITTERAL, b. 1858, Kentucky.
    6. ELLIOTT LITTERAL, b. 1860, Kentucky.
