SARAH CATHERINE FAIRCHILD, daughter of ELI W. FAIRCHILD and MALISSA JANE MAY, was born May 19, 1866 in Kentucky, died November 16, 1941 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in the family cemetery in Asa, Johnson County, Kentucky. She married SAMUEL DAVID MAY, son of JAMES LEWIS MAY and LOUISA A. PATRICK, March 8, 1884 in Johnson County, Kentucky. He was born September 4, 1859 in Floyd County, Kentucky, died June 20, 1934 in Asa, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Asa, Johnson County, Kentucky.

Notes: Samuel David May was the brother of Mary May and James Frank May, who married Amanda J. Pace, daughter of John C. Pace and Nancy Jane Bailey.

According to Kentucky birth records, Samuel D. May was born September 4, 1859 in Floyd County to James L. May and Louisa A. Patrick.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, Samuel D. May (age 24) married Sarah C. Fairchild (age 17) on March 8, 1884 in Johnson County.

According to her death certificate, Mary Catherine May died November 16, 1941 in Golden Rule Hospital in Paintsville from arteriosclerosis and valvular heart disease. Also on this certificate, her birth date is listed as May 19, 1866, her marital status as widowed, her husband as Samuel D. May, her parents as Eli Fairchild (b. Kentucky) and Malissa May (b. Kentucky), and the informant as Claude May of Asa, Kentucky.

According to her obituary:

      "Mother of Mrs. Otto Pratt and Eddie May, Heart Victim Mrs. Catherine May, 75, died in a local hospital at 11:30 o’clock Sunday morning. She had been treated at the hospital for a heart ailment sometime ago, then taken to the home of her son, Eddie May, Paintsville barber connected with Clyde Hayslett’s barber shop. Mrs. May had a paralytic stroke on November 10 and was never able to speak afterwards. Mrs. May was the mother of Mrs. Otto Pratt. Mr. Pratt is part owner of the Maggard & Pratt grocery here. She had been a member of the Denver Missionary Baptist Church for 41 years and had lived an active Christian life. She was one of the best loved citizens of the community and will be sadly missed by all. Other children surviving Mrs. May are, Mrs. Asa Ramey, Riceville; William May, Leander; Claude May, Asa and Mrs. John Music, Hager Hill. Mrs. May had made her home with her daughter at Hager Hill for many years. She was the widow of Samuel D. May. She was the daughter of Eli Fairchild. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Asa schoolhouse with Rev. Scott Castle in charge. The undertaking department of the Paintsville Furniture Company made burial preparations." According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Mary C. May died November 16, 1941 in Johnson County at the age of 75. She was living in Johnson County at the time of her death.

According to his obituary on Thursday, June 14, 1934: "E. D. May Is Dead A few minutes before press time news was received of the death of E. D. May which took place at his home on Court street about noon hour Wednesday. He had been ill only a few days suffering from a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. May was 59 years of age and one of our most prominent citizens. He was a native of Magoffin County and before coming to Paintsville was one of the leading educators and business men of that county. The death of Mr. May brings sorrow to a large number of friends in Johnson and Magoffin Counties. Funeral services have not been arraned. A full account of death,funeral and burial will be published next week." Then on June 21, 1934: "Well Known Asa Man Died Suddenly Last Wednesday S. D. May, age 74 years, died suddenly at his home at Asa, this county, last Wednesday, June 20, [mistake] Mr. May had not been in the best of health for a year or more but had been in his usual health. He was stricken while sitting in chair on the front pourch of the home and passed away suddenly. Mr. May was one of Johnson county's best citizens and had been a member of the Missionary Baptist Church for years and had lived a consistent Christian life. Besides his widow he is survived by six children as follows; Mrs. A. J. Ramey, Riceville; Willie May, Denver; Claude May, Asa; Mrs. Johnnie Music, East Point, and Mrs. Otto Pratt and Eddie May both of Paintsville. Funeral service were held at the May home at Asa Thursday afternoon with Rev. H. B.Conley, a life long friend of the family in charge. Burial followed in the family burial ground on the home farm." MALLIE E. CONLEY, daughter of WILLIAM D. CONLEY and ANNA BLANCHE "BLANCHE" MCFARLAND, was born May 2, 1906 in Kentucky, died in February of 1982 in Lincoln, Logan County, Illinois, and is buried in New Union Cemetery in Lincoln, Logan County, Illinois.

Notes: According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, Morgan M. Salyer married Sarah Patrick on November 26, 1885 in Magoffin County at the home of Green Patrick. The witnesses were Hugh Patrick and Samuel Montgomery, and the minister was Riley Howard.
