CURTIS CONLEY, son of ABLE GARFIELD CONLEY and AMANDA MERLENE WHITT, was born July 24, 1896 in Salyersville, Magoffin County, Kentucky, and died October 10, 1955 in Alameda County, California. He married MARGARET STRICKLAND, daughter of GEORGE E. STRICKLAND and IDA JONES, about 1916. She was born January 31, 1899 in Vernon Township, Scioto County, Ohio.

According to Ohio birth records, Maggie Strickland was born January 31, 1899 in Vernon Township, Scioto County, to George Strickland and Ida Jones.

When Curtis Conley's World War I draft registration card was filled out on August 24, 1918 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio, he stated that his closest relative was Margaret Conley of Sciotoville, Ohio, that he was born July 2, 1897 (it's July of 1896 in the 1900 census) in Salyersville, Kentucky, and that his father was born in Salyersville, Kentucky. He was found to have light blue eyes and brown hair.

According to California death record transcripts, Curtis Conley was born July 24, 1897 in Kentucky, and died October 10, 1955 in Alameda County. His father's surname is listed as Conley, and his mother's maiden name as Whitt.

On page 27 of the 1900 census for District 104 (Bloom Township) in Scioto County, Ohio (dated June 16, 1900), George Strickland is listed as the head of the household for house #254, he's a clay miner, born in September of 1876 in Ohio, parents born in Ohio, married for 2 years, and he's 23 years old. She married JAMES RICE, son of MARTIN M. RICE and SARAH STONE, January 14, 1868 in Johnson County, Kentucky. He was born May 7, 1845 in Floyd County, Kentucky, died December 4, 1917 in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Mitchell Price Cemetery in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky.

Notes: Information on this family can be found on pages 134 & 186 of "The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky," published and sold by The Magoffin County Historical Society. In that book it says "NANCY SALYER b. 15 Jun 1845 d. 16 Jun 1909 m. James Rice b. 7 May 1845 d. December 4 1917."

James Rice was the brother of Francis "Fannie" Rice and John J. Rice.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, Nancy Catharine Salyer married James Rice on January 14, 1868 in Johnson County.

Information found on the Johnson County Historical Society's website and photos of their headstones shows that Nancy Salyer Rice lived from June 15, 1845 to June 16, 1907, and was buried in Mitchell Price Cemetery in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky, and that James Rice lived from May 7, 1845 to December 4, 1917, and was buried in the same cemetery.

According to his death certificate, James Rice died December 4, 1917 in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky, from angina pectoris. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Floyd County, his birth date as May 7, 1845, his occupation as retired farmer, his parents as Martin M. Rice (b. Floyd County) and Sallie Stone (b. Floyd County), and the doctor as Grant Rice [Ulysses Grant Rice].

On pages 19 & 20 of the 1850 census for Johnson County, Kentucky (dated August 14 & 15, 1850), Martin M. Rice is listed as the head of the household for house #132, he's a farmer, born in Kentucky, and he's 41 years old. WILLIAM E. "BUD" SALYER, son of ELIZABETH CONLEY and HENRY SALYER, was born July 26, 1850 in Floyd County, Kentucky, and died January 25, 1936 in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky. He married CATHERINE BURKHART, daughter of GEORGE BURKHART and CATHERINE LEDINGTON, July 8, 1869 in Magoffin County, Kentucky. She was born in October of 1852 in Harlan County, Kentucky, and died before 1920.

There are reports that say that Catherine Burkhart's mother was Mary Salyer Polke, George Burkhart's 1st wife. According to Kentucky birth records, Catherine's sister, Rebecca, was born October 16, 1853 on Beech Fork in Harlan County to George Burkhart and Catherine Ledington. This was a year after Catherine was born.

According to her death certificate, Betty Burkhart Cooper [Elizabeth Burkhart] died January 27, 1951 in Bledsoe, Harlan County, Kentucky, from senility. Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Leslie County, Kentucky, her birth date as March 28, 1868, her marital status as widowed, her parents as George Burkhart and Katie Ledington, the informant as John Cooper, and the burial place as Cooper Cemetery in Bledsoe, Kentucky.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, William E. Salyer married Katharine Burkheart July 8, 1869 in Magoffin County.

According to his death certificate, Bud Salyer died January 25, 1936 in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky, from senility. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Kentucky, his birth date as July 26, 1850, his marital status as widowed, his occupation as farmer, his parents as Henry Salyer (b. Kentucky) and Nancey Conley (b. Kentucky), and the informant as Wilson Salyer of Oil Springs.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Bud Salyer died January 25, 1936 in Oil Springs at the age of 85.

Also listed is Clarence Salyers (nephew, single, farmer, born in Kentucky, he's living in the same house that he was in 1935, 3rd grade education, age 22). Clarence was the son of Mintie's brother, Manford.

She was born about 1839 in Lawrence County, Kentucky, and died in March of 1860 in Johnson County, Kentucky. He married (2) MELVINA HAMILTON, January 12, 1861 in Johnson County, Kentucky. She was born in September of 1835 in Floyd County, Kentucky, and died after 1900 in Johnson County, Kentucky.

Absalom Conley was a veteran of the Civil War.

Daniel Jayne's full name was reportedly Daniel Boone Jayne.

The two daughters of Absalom and Cynthia are found living with Cynthia's parents in 1860, and the two sons are living with their father in the home of his parents.

Melvina Hamilton Conley's maiden name was determined by finding the death certificate of her daughter Mary. Her last name has also been reported to be Rice, so it's possible that she married a Rice prior to marrying Absalom.

According to Kentucky marriage records, Absalom Conley (born in Floyd County, age 19) married Cynthia Ann Jayne (born in Lawrence County, age 15) on December 8, 1854 in Johnson County, Kentucky.

It's hard to read Mary Salyer Conley's parents names on her death certificate, but it looks like it says Jackson Salyer and Polly McCarty. When her brother Levi died from tuberculosis in Little Gap, Johnson County, on October 6, 1915, his parents are listed as Levi Salyer and Polly McCarty. His birth date was 1837. When her brother Benjamin died from chronic interstitial nephritis in Little Gap on March 8, 1918, his father is listed as Levi Salyer (b. Virginia) and his mother's maiden name isn't known. Benjamin's birth date was June 22, 1837.

According to Kentucky birth records, there was an unnamed female born alive July 11, 1876 in Johnson County to Edmund Conly (b. Johnson County) and Mary A. Salyer (b. Johnson County).

According to her death certificate, Mary Ann Salyer Conley died July 16, 1911 in Johnson County from acute nephritis. Also on this certificate, her birth date is listed as 1840, her age as 71, her marital status as widowed, her parents as Jackson Salyer [hard to read] and Polly McCarty [hard to read].

Besides his widow he is survived by several children. The body was prepared for burial by the undertaking department of the Mountain Furniture & Hardware Company.      Louise Jackson, 92, of Dayton, died Wednesday, November 29 in the Washington Manor Nursing Home in Dayton, OH following a five week illness. She was a former resident of Johnson County. She was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary Saylor Caudill of Riceville. She was the widow of the late Elisha Jackson of Oil Springs. Immediate survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Lucy Caudill of Riceville, Mrs. Rushia Blanton of Oil Springs and Mrs. Ruby Gullett of Dayton, OH, one son, Henry Jackson of St. Paris, OH. Mrs. Jackson was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church and was one of the two Civil War Widows in the United States. Funeral services were held at the Dryden road Pentecostal Church in Dayton, with Rev. Arvis Swafford officiating. Burial was in the Millerstown Cemetery at St. Paris, OH.

Samuel's mother's maiden name was reportedly Permilia Witt.

Eveline Conley and Samuel George Hughes were reportedly married March 10, 1880 in Lawrence County, Kentucky.

According to her death certificate, Eveline Hughes died May 19, 1921 in Busseyville from carcinoma of the uterus, which she had for about 3 years. Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Johnson County, her birth date as November 22, 1855, her marital status as married, her parents as Absalom Conley (b. Johnson County, Kentucky) and Sinthie Janes (b. Johnson County, Kentucky), the informant as Jarret Hughes of Busseyville, Kentucky, and the burial place as Busseyville.

According to his death certificate, S. G. George Hughes died July 7, 1935 in Van Lear from myocarditis and cardiorenal disease. Also on this certificate, his birth date is listed as June 8, 1852, his marital status as widowed, his wife as Evylin (Conley) Hughes, his father as Israel Hughes (b. Virginia), his mother's maiden name as unknown, and the informant as George Hughes of Van Lear, Kentucky.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Samuel G. Hughes died July 7, 1935 in Johnson County at the age of 83.

She was born February 14, 1844 in Magoffin County, Kentucky, died October 18, 1936 in Lakeville, Magoffin County, Kentucky, and is buried in Captain Powers Cemetery in Magoffin County, Kentucky.

Cynthia Montgomery was the sister of Mary J. Montgomery and Edie Montgomery.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, James Montgomery, son of John, married Elizabeth Picklesimer, daughter of Sarah, on February 26, 1840 in Floyd County.

James Montgomery's 2nd wife was Nancy Jackson. This was verified by finding the birth records of 2 of her children. William James Montgomery was born May 24, 1856 in Licking, Floyd County, to James Montgomery and Nancy Jackson, and Ben Franklin Montgomery was born October 30, 1859 in Floyd County to James Montgomery and Nancy Jackson.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, James Conley married Cynthia Montgomery on May 18, 1865 in Magoffin County at the home of Lewis Powers. The witnesses were John W. May and William Flint, and the minister was Wallis Bailey.

Information found on findagrave.com shows that James and Cynthia Montgomery Conley were both buried in Powers Cemetery in Magoffin County, Kentucky. No headstone photos are provided.

According to her death certificate, Cynthia Montgomery Conley died October 18, 1936 in Lakeville, Magoffin County, from senility. Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Magoffin County, her birth date as February 14, 1844, her marital status as widowed, her husband as James Conley, her parents as Jim Montgomery (b. She was born January 15, 1844 in Floyd County, Kentucky, and died after 1920.

Lewis P. Conley's middle name was reportedly "Power."

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, Levi P. Conley [sic] married Sarah Picklesimer on June 14, 1866 in Magoffin County at the home of James Picklesimer. The witnesses were John W. May and James Power, and the minister was Wallace Bailey.

Lewis P. Conley received a pension for serving in the 14th Kentucky Infantry during the Civil War on August 10, 1887. He was classified as an invalid. His widow started getting the pension on October 28, 1904.

On page 88 of the 1850 census for My District in Floyd County, Kentucky (dated August 27, 1850), James Picklesimer is listed as the head of the household for house #547, he's a farmer, born in Kentucky, and he's 31 years old. She married JOHN REED CAUDILL, son of BENJAMIN CAUDILL and ABIGAIL PENNINGTON, April 16, 1868 in Magoffin County, Kentucky. He was born in January of 1846 in Kentucky, and died in September of 1916.

He married (2) IRENE M. WILLIAMS, daughter of ALBERT LONDON WILLIAMS and NORA ALICE HENSLEY. She was born November 10, 1914 in Magoffin County, Kentucky, and died August 31, 2001 in Muncie, Deleware County, Indiana.

When Wash Penix was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Magoffin County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer in Salyersville, Magoffin County, that his closest relative was Mahala Penix of Salyersville, and that he was born October 17, 1880. He was found to be of medium height and build, with blue eyes and dark-colored hair. Not being able to read or write, he signed the card with an "X."

He was born September 30, 1890 in Blaine, Lawrence County, Kentucky, died March 21, 1949 in Louisa, Lawrence County, Kentucky, and is buried in Pine Hill Cemetery in Louisa, Lawrence County, Kentucky.

Notes: In the 1900 census, Cleveland Robinette's birth date is listed as August of 1892, when he filled out his World War I draft registration card he said that he was born in 1991 but he didn't know the date, he is 19 in 1910, on his death certificate it's listed as September 30, 1890.

When Cleveland Robinett's World War I draft registration card was filled out on June 5, 1917 in Lawrence County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer in Torchburg, Lawrence County, that he had a wife and one child, and that he was born in 1891 in Louisa, Kentucky but he didn't known the exact date. He was found to be short and slender, and he had dark brown eyes and black hair. Not being able to read or write, he signed the card with an "X."

According to her death certificate, Vadie Hughes Robinett died November 28, 1948 in Louisa from chronic myocarditis. Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Louisa, her birth date as August 25, 1896, her marital status as married, her husband as Cleveland Robinett (age 57), her parents as Samuel Hughes (b.
