JOHN ARTHUR HOLDERBY, son of POWELL HOLDERBY JR. and WANDA FAY BARNETT, was born November 30, 1950 in Plymouth, Ohio, died July 9, 2010 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, and is buried in Alton Cemetery in Prairie Township, Franklin County, Ohio. He married (1) JANIS SUE JONES (divorced). He married (2) MARY ANN (unknown last name) (divorced).

Notes: Information on John Holderby can be found on page 199 of "The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky," published and sold by The Magoffin County Historical Society.

From an article in The Columbus Dispatch on July 10, 2010:
Even as a gun was pointed at John Holderby and his daughter, he stayed calm and tried to defuse the situation.
"Hey, nobody needs to be shot today," he told the man who broke into his Hilltop house just after midnight yesterday, a family friend said.
But the gunman pulled the trigger, shooting Holderby, 59, once in the chest. He died about 12:15 a.m. yesterday after stumbling into his front yard at 326 S. Richardson Ave., police said.
Holderby's neighbors had only positive things to say about him.
"He's really kind. I really don't see how they could do something to somebody like that," said Marie France, who lives across the street from Holderby's home.
Early yesterday, she stood in front of her house and looked at Holderby's body, which still was face-down in the yard.
Police said the shooting occurred when a man broke into Holderby's home.
Jessica Hayes, Holderby's adult daughter, called 911 shortly after midnight, screaming that a man had come into the house and shot her dad.
Deb Paat, a friend of the family's, said she was told that Holderby had come down his stairs to find a man pointing a gun at Hayes. When he tried to reason with him and get him to leave, the man shot him, Paat said.
Holderby had three children, and Hayes was often at his house. He occasionally looked after her young children, one neighbor said.
Holderby owned a bar on Sullivant Avenue, Holderby's Tavern, which neighbors said he bought a year ago and brought out of disrepair. Within a month, he had the bar full of customers, they said.
"You went in there and you felt welcome, and he was just a really good person," Paat said.
"He had this thing for darts," said J. Owens, whose niece lives in the same Hilltop neighborhood. Owens said Holderby had won championships playing darts.
According to a police report, it's possible that a suspect in the homicide might have been hanging out at the bar. Shortly after the shooting yesterday morning, an officer in a police helicopter spotted two people near the area who matched the description of the shooter, said Columbus Police Sgt. James Morrow. They were questioned, but no arrests have been made in the case.

According to his obituary, "John Holderby, 59, of Columbus, was stolen from this world by a gunman's bullet, at his home, July 9, 2010. Born in Plymouth, Ohio to Powell and Wanda Holderby, both of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by 1 son, John Holderby Jr.; daughters, Melissa Holderby and Jessica Hayes; sister, Cindy Bolen; brother, Jim Holderby; along with six grandchildren. Relocating to the Westside of Columbus of which he loved, and where he flourished. He became a man of the people, who accumulated a community of friends throughout his life's work of creating social establishments. The most recent, a crowning achievement that bares his name is Holderby's Tavern, where beloved co-owner Candy Green will carry on his spirit and traditions. With each of his endeavors he fathered a new family of friends. All who now share the same pain, and yearn to see his infectious smile one last time. A caring father, adoring brother, and generous friend, John leaves behind a legacy of love, as we are left to endure on the tear soaked streets of the community he cherished. We will miss you John."

John Holderby's killer hasn't been caught as of January 2012.

Samuel Salyer served in the Kentucky Legislator from 1859-1861. The town of Salyersville in Magoffin County was named after him.

From the book "Kentucky's Last Frontier" by Henry Preston Scalf (page 122):

"Salyersville was named for Samuel Salyer, the 'Kentucky Legislator,' as genealogists distinguished between him and the Samuel Salyers who was in the North Carolina Legislature. A son of William Salyer, Samuel migrated from Copper Creek, Scott County, Virginia, to Kentucky in 1818, when Samuel, the future legislator, was five years old. [Scott County was made November 24, 1814 from parts of Lee, Russell, and Washington counties]. The family settled on the Cumberland River, moved soon to Breathitt, and later to Floyd County.
"On the journey through the forests to the Cumberland River, William Salyer strapped little Abner, a younger brother of Samuel's, on the side of a horse, balancing the opposite side with a large copper kettle. After the family was established in Floyd, the father engaged in farming and stock buying.
"Samuel Salyer grew to manhood, had few educational advantages, but developed a rugged, salty personality that made him popular. He entered the race for the House of Representatives against James E. Stewart, a rising and able lawyer, who afterward served as Circuit Judge. the contrast between the two men was great, accentuated by the charge that Salyer could not read or write. But he defeated the polished Stewart and dedicated himself to getting a new county created on the Licking. He was successful in 1860.
"Samuel Salyer died in 1890 at the age of seventy-seven, while he was living at the mouth of Oakley Creek, and is buried near Royalton at the mouth of Salyer's Branch."
