She was born October 16, 1897 in Kentucky, died December 15, 1992 in Boyd County, Kentucky, and is buried in Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky.

      Notes: According to his obituary found on findagrave.com, "Dr. Edward Williams Connely, 72, one of Ashland's best-known physicians, died Monday morning in Our Lady of Belefonte Hospital following a long illness. Before his retirement in 1983, the obstetrician-gynecologist had delivered thousands of babies in Ashland. Dr. Connelly was born into a family of physicians on Sept. 8, 1917, in Paintsville, a son of Ethel Williams Connelly of Ashland and the late Dr. Edward Buck Connelly. During an interview last year with The Independent, he said he was unsure for a long time about what he wanted to do with his life. But the choice finally became obvious - about 50 members of his family, from great-grandfathers to cousins, had been or were doctors. "I used to listen to them talk about cases they had and it always seemed so very interesting," he said. His medical education began at Marshall College - now Marshall University - in Huntington, W.Va., during the 1930s, where his professors let him lecture in zoology lab before he even had a bachelor's degree. After graduatin from Marshall, he attended the Jefferson College of Medicine in Philadelphia. Dr. Connelly servied in the U.S. Army during World War II as a field doctor in the Phillipines, where he met his future wife - Maria - who died in 1979. After the war, he returned to Philadelphia to complete a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Pennsylvania, and then returned to Ashland, starting his practice here in 1951. In 1957, he served a seven-month fellowship at McGill University's Royal Victorian Hospital in Canada. In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Connelly was known as a classical pianist, as a composer, as an artist, as a self-trained architect who designed a family home that overlooks downtown Ashland from atop Dysard Hill, and as an amateur genalogist who traced his family's history back some 300 years. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are four daughters, Lisa Ziegler and Mary Wurtzebach, both of Denver, Colo., Melissa Behnke of Ashland, and Allison Connelly of Lexington; a son, Ned Connelly of Fort Mitchell; and 10 grandchildren. A private graveside service for family members will be conducted at the Ashland Cemetery.

He was born October 29, 1893 in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky, died April 12, 1965 in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville, Johnson County, Kentucky.

He was born December 22, 1926 in Oil Springs, died May 1, 2005, and was buried in Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Avinell West Stafford. She was survived by her husband, Charles Marion Stafford; 2 daughters, Brenda Marion Stafford and Julia Annette Stafford (both at home); 1 brother, Robert N. West (of Cleveland); and 3 sisters, Mrs. Viva Mae Crace (Oil Springs), Mrs. Anna L. Bayes (Gratis, Ohio), and Miss Eula Lee West (San Francisco, California). When Daniel Sanford Ross' World War II draft registration card was filled out he stated that he was working for Bethlehem Shipyard in Baltimore, Maryland, that the person who would always know his address was Mrs. Cora B. Ross of South Webster, Ohio, and that he was born August 9, 1888 in Elkfork, Kentucky. There was a mistake in the scanning of this card, as the 2nd page pertains to someone else.

According to Social Security death record transcripts, Cora Ross was born February 14, 1892, and died in February of 1980. She received her Social Security card prior to 1951 in Ohio, and her last place of residence was in South Webster, Scioto County, Ohio.

According to Ohio death record transcripts, Cora B. Ross was born about 1892 in Kentucky, and died February 28, 1980 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, at the age of 88. She was widowed and living in Scioto County at the time of her death.

ROSS, son of NELS ROSS and BETTIE H. (unknown last name), about 1916. He was born September 18, 1888 in St. Mary's, Pottawatomie County, Kansas, died in 1958, and is buried in Topeka Cemetery in Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas.

Edith Connelley's DAR (Daughter's of the American Revolution) record is: DAR ID Number 82193. In a DAR directory from 1911, her name is listed as Miss Edith MacGregor Connelley and she's living at 816 Lincoln Street in Topeka, Kansas.

In a biographical note on the Denver Public Library's website it says that William and Sarah Atalanta [The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky also has it as Atalanta] Fife Connelley had 2 children and they were Elsie Louise (b. 1890) and Edith MacGregor (b. 1892). It also says that William worked on his last book with his daughter, Elsie, but this was Edith, who worked on other books as well. Edith gave her daughter Elaine a middle name of Elsie, after Edith's sister who reportedly died in 1894.

When August W. Ross' World War I draft registration card was filled out on June 5, 1917 in Topeka, Kansas, he stated that he was an architect working for the State of Kansas, that he was married and had a dependent wife, father, and mother, and that he was born September 18, 1888 in St. Mary's, Kansas. He was found to be tall, of medium build, and he had gray eyes and brown hair.

Information found on findagrave.com and a photo of his headstone in Topeka Cemetery shows that August W. Ross lived from 1888 to 1958.

CATHERINE CONLEY, daughter of THOMAS CONLEY JR. and MAHALA DAVIS, was born about 1835 in Floyd County, Kentucky, and died before 1870. She married WILLIAM W. MAY, son of BLAIR MAY and SARAH ADAMS, October 28, 1852 in Floyd County, Kentucky. He was born May 7, 1830 in Floyd County, Kentucky, died June 24, 1917 in Leander, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Hargus Conley Cemetery in Riceville, Johnson County, Kentucky. William W. May married (2) MARY CONLEY in 1863. She was born about 1847. He married (3) MARY ETTA ROBERTSON.

Notes: William W. May was the brother of Harvey Trimble May and Robert W. May.

Information on this family can be found on page 685 of the book "Johnson County, Kentucky: A History of the County, and Genealogy of Its People Up to the Year 1927" by Mitchell Hall. In that book it says that Blair May married Sally Adams on May 17, 1829 in Floyd Couty, Kentucky.

William W. May married Catherine Conley about 1852 and she reportedly died about 1862. Kentucky marriage record transcripts show that a William W. May (b. 1834) married a Mary Conley (b. 1847) in 1863. The county that they were married in isn't listed. Mary Conley was reportedly the daughter of Henry Conley and Rebecca Blair, and the mother of Dial Floyd May and Samuel E. May, although no records could be found to prove this. She reportedly died July 4, 1868 in Floyd County, Kentucky. Mary's sister married Robert W. May, brother of William. On page 352 of the book "The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky" it says that Mary Conley married a Farmer May, and it says the same thing on page 139 of the book "The Founding of Harman's Station". It's possible that William May was also known as Farmer May. His nephew Thomas Blair May's oldest son was named Farmer May.

According to Kentucky death records, Blair May (b. Russell County, Virginia), son of Caleb and Margaret May, died October 23, 1858 in Floyd County at the age of 49 years 11 months and 23 days from typhoid fever.

Their daughter Mallie is also buried in this cemetery.

Conley was born September 25, 1866 in Johnson County, Kentucky, died July 15, 1941 in Lincoln, Logan County, at the age of 74, and was buried in Union Cemetery in Lincoln. JOHN BURNS CONLEY, son of HENRY CLAY HARRIS CONLEY and CATHARINE RICE, was born October 17, 1877 in Johnson County, Kentucky, died October 14, 1957 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. He married GERTRUDE SPENCER, daughter of WILLIAM M. SPENCER and LEONE ELIZABETH RAMSEY, about 1907 in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky. She was born March 19, 1885 in Breathitt County, Kentucky, and died March 20, 1978 in Jefferson County, Kentucky.

Notes: Information on this family can be found on page 331 of "The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky," published and sold by The Magoffin County Historical Society. That book says that John E. Conley was born in 1878, died in Louisville, Kentucky, and married Gertrude Spencer in Lexington, Kentucky.

An article found on ancestry.com that was originally printed in the American Historical Society Magazine in 1922, provided Gertrude's mother's maiden name.

When John Burns Conley's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Jackson, Breathitt County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a coal mining engineer with no regular employer, that his closest relative was Gertrude Conley of Jackson, and that he was born October 17, 1877. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had brown eyes and black hair.

According to his obituary, John B. Conley (age 80), son of the late Henry Clay Harris Conley (H. C. H.), suffered a stroke 7 years prior to his death which left him speechless, but had been critically ill for only 3 days prior to his death. He was a civil engineer, and he helped build the Panama Canal and other government projects. He was born October 17, 1877 in Johnson County, died October 13, 1957 at home in Louisville, and was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Lexington. He was married to Gertrude Spencer of Breathitt County. He was survived by 1 daughter, Mrs. Katherine Conley Wheeler, with whom he made his home; 1 brother, Heber Conley (of Paintsville); 3 sisters, Mrs. May Sherman (Paintsville), Mrs. Virginia Preston (Paintsville), and Mrs. Stella Spradlin (Paintsville); and 2 grandchildren. Wells Cemetery in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky. She married BENJAMIN J. SPRADLIN, son of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN "FRANK" SPRADLIN and PERMELIA HOWES, about 1901. He was born December 12, 1870 in Kentucky, died December 16, 1943 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Lackey, Johnson County, Kentucky.

      Electious Howes was a Methodist preacher and a county official. He in company with two brothers, one of whom was William, came to Kentucky from Maryland in 1809 or 1810 and became a pioneer settler in Floyd, now Johnson County. William and the other brother settled in Clay County, Kentucky. Mr. Howes organized many churches of his denomination in this section of the Big Sandy. His influence in his community was beneficent, and through his energy and good judgment he became the owner of large tracts of land, on Rockhouse Creek. He died at his old homestead on this creek. The court order books of Floyd County show where he was allowed to perform the rites of matrimony on March 14, 1836. (See page 23, book No. 7.)

      John Howes was a Methodist preacher, a lawyer, and a county official. A glance at the county officials of Johnson County will give one an idea of Mr. Howes' service. Altogether he served 28 years as county court clerk, which is proof as to his popularity. Although he did not practice as an attorney he was in a way looked up to as an arbiter and legal adviser.

According to Kentucky marriage records, Benjamin F. Spradlin (single, b. Floyd County, age 22) married Peremilia Howes (single, b. Paintsville, age 18) on May 6, 1855 in Johnson County.

According to Kentucky birth records, Alfonzo Spradlin was born May 8, 1856 in Johnson County to Benjamin F. Spradlin and Permelia Howes.

According to her obituary, Mrs. Stella C. Conley Spradlin (age 84), daughter of Henry C. and Katheryn Rice Conley, lived most of her life in Paintsville. She was born August 26, 1881, died October 20, 1965 in Golden Years Rest Home in Lackey, Kentucky, and was buried in Wells Cemetery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben J. Spradlin. She was survived by 4 sons, Henry Spradlin (of Catlettsburg), Hervie Spradlin (West Van Lear), Glenn Spradlin (Martin, Kentucky), and Charles Spradlin (Thealka, Kentucky); 2 sisters, Mrs. Virginia Preston (Paintsville) and Mrs. Fred Sherman (West Van Lear); 7 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. According to his death certificate, Benjamin J. Spradlin died December 16, 1943 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, from coronary schlerosis. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Kentucky, his birth date as December 12, 1870, his marital status as married, his wife as Stella Conley Spradlin (age 62), his occupation as retired salesman, he was a Spanish American War veteran, his parents as Frank Spradlin (b. Kentucky) and Pamelia Howes (b. Kentucky), the informant as Glenn Spradlin of Prestonsburg, Kentucky, and the burial place as Paintsville.

According to his obituary:

     "Ben J. Spradlin, 73, died suddenly, Thursday, December 16, 1943, at his home on Third Street. His death was attributed to a heart attack.
     "After completing various chores about the house that afternoon Mr. Spradlin and complained of a pain in his side and death came shortly after. A prominent man of our community, Mr. Spradlin had been a traveling salesman before retiring about ten years ago. He had been connected with the Paintsville Grocery Company for many years in this capacity. He was well known and respected in the town and county.
     "Mr. Spradlin was a veteran of the Spanish American War and served with the Kentucky Volunteers in Cuba. He was Adjutant of Camp No. 47, U.S. Spanish War Veterans.
     "He was a member of The Christian Church.
     "The son of Frank and Permelia Howes Spradlin, the deceased had wed Stella Rice Conley. Five sons, all living, were born to this couple. They are Hervie C., U.S. Navy, Henry F. Cincinnati, Marcus, Baltimore, Chas F., Ashland, and Glenn C., Prestonsburg, all of who were here to attend the funeral.
     "The funeral was held Sunday, December 19, 1943, and burial was made in the Wells Cemetery under the direction of the undertaking department of the Paintsville Furniture Co.
      "Pallbearers were members of Paintsville Camp No. 47, Department of Kentucky and included C. T. Rule, Commander, Frank M. Preston, Vice-Commander, C. G. Davis, Quartermaster, Dennis B. Conley, Adjutant, Wiley Gilbert and Harlan W. Reed, Salyersville and Ben F. Roberts war veterans." SPRADLIN, was born March 17, 1906 in Johnson County, Kentucky, died April 1, 1957 in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky, and is buried in Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky. He married ALLIE COLLINS, daughter of MARSHALL M. COLLINS and BELLE HALL, about 1926. She was born in 1907 in Kentucky, and died in 2005.

"Doctor Collins is a member of Wayland Lodge of Masons, the Scottish Rite Consistory at Covington and the Mystic Shrine at Ashland. In 1903 he married Miss Belle Hall, daughter of Lee and Ell (Hamilton) Hall. Before their separation in 1907 Doctor and Mrs. Collins had three children, Rush, Elsie and Allie Colins. She died of the influenza November 25, 1918, and she had previously been married to Charly Auxier. On January 15, 1919, Doctor Collins married Miss Beatrice Adams, daughter of Garel Adams of Myrtle, Floyd County."

A photo of their headstone shows that Marcus D. Spradlin lived from 1906 to 1957, and that Allie T. Spradlin lived from 1907 to 2005.

According to his obituary, Marcus Spradlin (age 51), son of Mrs. Ben J. Spradlin (of Paintsville) and the late Mr. Spradlin, had been employed in the combustion department of the Armco Steel Corporation since moving to Ashland in 1943. He was born March 17, 1906 in Johnson County, died April 1, 1957 in King's Daughters Hospital in Ashland following a brief illness, and was buried in Ashland Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, Mrs. Allie Spradlin; 2 sons, Randolph Spradlin (of Ashland) and Ben Mar Spradlin (U.S. Navy); 1 daughter, Mrs. Ralph Boggs (Ashland); and 4 brothers, Hervie C. Spradlin (Van Lear), Henry F. Spradlin (Homestead, Florida), Charles F. Spradlin (Thealka, Kentucky), and Glenn C. Spradlin (Prestonsburg). She married FRED LEE SHERMAN, son of HENRY R. SHERMAN and LUCINDA OSBORNE, July 28, 1909 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky. He was born March 24, 1886 in Kentucky, died March 29, 1969 in Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville, Johnson County, Kentucky.

Information on this family can be found on page 477 of the book "Johnson County, Kentucky: A History of the County, and Genealogy of Its People Up to the Year 1927" by Mitchell Hall. In that book it says that May Conley married Fred Sherman and their child was Clarence Sherman. It also says "This family lives at Paintsville. Mr. Sherman is a mine foreman for the North-East Coal Company, at Thealka."

Fred Sherman was the brother of Henry "Buck" Sherman.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, H. R. Sherman (age 31) married Lucinda Osborn (age 17) on March 19, 1885 in Johnson County.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, Fred Sherman (age 24) married May Conley (age 17) on July 28, 1909 in Johnson County.

When Fred Lee Sherman's World War I draft registration card was filled out on on September 12, 1918 [presumably in Paintsville], he stated that he was a miner working for North East Coal Company, that his closest relative was Mae Sherman of Paintsville, and that he was born March 24, 1886. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had brown eyes and sark brown hair.

A photo of their headstone shows that May Sherman lived from 1892 to 1979, and that Fred Sherman lived from 1886 to 1969.

According to her obituary, May Conley Sherman (age 87), daughter of H. C. H. and Katherine Rice Conley, was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a resident of Paintsville at the time of her death. She was born November 17, 1891 in Johnson County, died February 24, 1979 in Riverview Manor Nursing Home in Prestonsburg, and was buried in Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Sherman, on March 29, 1969. She was survived by 1 son, Clarence Frederick "Bake" Sherman (of Winter Park, Florida). "BILLY" FAIRCHILD, son of FRANCES CANTRELL and ENOCH FAIRCHILD, was born November 3, 1836 in Jennies Creek, Floyd County, Kentucky, died March 21, 1926 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Old Fairchild Cemetery in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky. He married (1) BARBARA ANN ESTEP, daughter of SAMUEL ESTEP and ALBETINE BOWEN, February 4, 1861 in Johnson County, Kentucky. She was born about 1846 in Johnson County, Kentucky, and died before 1900. He married (2) LAURA SPRADLIN.

Notes: Information on this family can be found on page 228 of the book "Johnson County, Kentucky: A History of the County, and Genealogy of Its People Up to the Year 1927" by Mitchell Hall. In that book it says that William "Billy" Fairchild was born about 1835 on Jennie's Creek, and died March 21, 1926. He was married 1st to Alva Estep and their children were Mary (married Francis Marion Bayes), Dr. J. F. (married Sue Allen, daughter of Captain Jack Allen), Minta Belle (married Dr. W. F. Fairchild, son of Isaiah and Susanna Miller Fairchild), Alra (married Randolph Salmons), and Jessie (married North J. Price). Billy Fairchild's 2nd wife was Laura Spradlin and their child was William Fairchild Jr. It also says:

     "William Fairchild was for many years a blacksmith in Paintsville. He lived across Paint Creek from the town. He served in the Civil War in the 14th, 39th, and 45th regiments of the Union. He died in the last few years and with the death of this good old man Johnson County's list of old soldiers was reduced to only a few."

Barbara Ann Estep was the sister of Mary Ann Estep.

(October 7, 1865 - January 19, 1941), and Susan Allen Fairchild (wife of Dr. John R. Fairchild - b. September 30, 1869).

North Jackson Price was the brother of Julia Ann Price, who married Martin Van Buren Wheeler. Martin Wheeler's 1st wife was Elizabeth Pelphrey, daughter of Alexander F. Pelphrey and Ailsey Lemasster.

Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Kentucky, his birth date as March 4, 1854, his marital status as widowed, his wife as Jessie Bays, his occupation as retired poultry dealer, his parents as Andrew Jackson Price (b. Virginia) and Jemima Osborne (b. Kentucky), the informan as Mrs. Ruth Gamboe of Paintsville, and the burial place as Mayo Cemetery.

     "N. J. Price, 81 years of age died at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Floyd Gamboe, on upper Main street. The aged man had been ill for the past year but had been confined to his room for the past month, and his death, although expected came as a shock to his family and friends. Mr. Price had spent his entire life in Paintsville where he was known and respected as one of the county's best citizens. Most of his younger days were spent as a clerk on Big Sandy River packet poats plying between Catlettsburg and Pikeville. Later he was connected with his brother-in-law, Capt. C. V. Meek in the operation of a steamboat line on the Big Sandy. Later he engaged in the produce business until he retired from active life. "North" Price, as he was familiarly known, was a member of one of the most prominent families of Eastern Kentucky and was the last surviving member of a family of ten children, three girls and seven boys. Among the many prominent people to whom he was related are Mrs. Alice Mayo of Ashland and Miss Ora May Preston of Paintsville, both of whom were his nieces. His father and mother were among the old pioneers of the Big Sandy Valley. His father, Andrew Jackson Price, was a prominent Baptist minister of his day, and his mother, Mrs. Jemima (Osborn) Price, conducted a hotel in Paintsville for many years after the death of her husband. Mr. Price was twice married. By his first marriage he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Nevada Pendleton, of Portsmouth, Ohio, and Mrs. Clara Walls of Montana. By his second marriage he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Gamboe of Paintsville with whom he made his home. Mrs. Pendleton and Mrs. Gamboe were present when the end came, but Mrs. Walls was unable to get here because of the bad condition of the roads. Funeral arrangements have not been fully completed, but funeral services well be held Saturday with burial in the Mayo Cemetery."
