EVERETT CONLEY, son of JOHN ELLIOTT CONLEY and SUSAN JAMES, was born December 27, 1892 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, died February 7, 1922 in Estill, Floyd County, Kentucky, and is buried in Jennies Creek, Johnson County, Kentucky. He married TRESSIE FOSTER, daughter son of JOHN W. FOSTER and CAROLINE GULLETT, August 29, 1916 in Johnson County, Kentucky. She was born about 1900 in Kentucky.

Notes: Information on this family can be found on page 295 of "The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky," published and sold by The Magoffin County Historical Society. In that book it says that Everett Conley was born December 27, 1892 in Johnson County, died February 7, 1922, married Tressie Foster, and that their children were Laura May Conley and Nan Conley. Nan Conley was Tressie's sister, as is shown in the 1910 census [Tressie was about 10 years old when Nannie was born]. In 1920, Tressie is living with her parents, and her daughter Laura is listed as her sister [birth records show that Laura Conley is Tressie Foster's daughter]. In 1930 Tressie Foster Conley is still found still living with her parents, her last name is listed as Foster, her age is 21 instead of 40, and her daughter Laura is listed as Nannie's daughter [although Nannie would have been 8 years old when Laura was born]. There is a little extra information provided here to help prove this line.

Information on this family can also be found on pages 472 & 506 of the book "Johnson County, Kentucky: A History of the County, and Genealogy of Its People Up to the Year 1927" by Mitchell Hall. In that book it says that Evert Conley married a Foster and their child was Nan Conley.

Tressie Foster was the half-sister of Loudena Litteral.

According to Joseph Eugene Conley of Paintsville, Kentucky. Everett Conley was born December 27, 1892, and died February 7, 1922 in Floyd County. He married (1) Tressie Foster, daughter of John Foster and Caroline Gullett, on August 29, 1916 in Paintsville. She was born about 1900 in Magoffin County, and died during the flu epidemic in 1918 in Paintsville. Joe also says that Everett married (2) Susie Collins, daughter of Alexander Collins and Mary Seabolt, June 27, 1921 in Johnson County. She was born in 1895. Also on Joe's site, it says that Everett and Tressie had one child, Laura Mae Conley, who was born September 18, 1917 in Paintsville, died June 25, 1983 in Dayton, Ohio, and that Everett and Susie had one child, Forest Conley, who was born about 1922 in Floyd County, and was killed in action during World War II. The evidence shows that Tressie lived past 1918 but was no longer with Everett in 1920, although he is listed as married on his death certificate. It also shows that Susie Collins did have a son named Faris Collins on January 28, 1917 in Johnson County, which would have been when Everett was married to Tressie. It appears that Susie Collins eventually married a man by the name of Elzie Hunt [they later divorced] and moved to Pike County. Faris was listed with the last name Hunt in the 1930 and 1940 census reports.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, James Litteral married Caroline Gullett on March 5, 1886 in Magoffin County at the home of William Gullett. The witnesses were John Salyer and J. W. Conley, and the minister was Henry Whitt.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, John W. Foster married Caroline Litteral on October 31, 1896 in Magoffin County at the home of William Gullett. The witnesses were J. P. Conley and Asroe Foster, and the minister was J. J. Prater.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, Roscoe Penix married Lulie Litteral on April 25, 1904 in Magoffin County at the home of Bud Foster. The witnesses were J. D. Crace and John Hampton, and the minister was B. W. Whitaker.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, Everett Conley (age 22) married Tressie Foster (age 18) on August 29, 1916 in Johnson County.

According to Kentucky birth record transcripts, Faris Collins was born January 28, 1917 in Johnson County to Susie Collins.

According to her obituary, Loudena Foster Haney (age 46) died December 9, 1937 at home in West Paintsville from diabetes. She was survived by her husband, Floyd Haney Sr. She was the mother of 10 children, 7 of whom survived her; Mrs. Eva Montgomery, Mrs. Ina Risner, Mrs. Bessie Ward, Mrs. Leona Webb, Miss Maggie Haney, Buck Haney, and Bill Haney. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mrs. Caroline Foster, 6 months prior.

According to her obituary, Eva Penix Montgomery (age 54), daughter of the late Roscoe and Lula Litteral Penix, was a resident of Marion, Indiana, at the time of her death. She was born February 4, 1909 in Magoffin County, died June 9, 1963 in Marion General Hospital following a brief illness, and was buried in Keaton Cemetery on Davis Branch. She was survived by her husband, Willis Montgomery; 4 sons, Charles Montgomery (of Ashtabula, Ohio), Marvin Montgomery (Marion, Indiana), Glen Montgomery (Marion), and Joe Kenneth Montgomery (Paintsville, Kentucky); 3 daughters, Mrs. Louisa Baldridge (Marion), Mrs. Juanta Fairchild (Paintsville), and Miss Patsy Carol Montgomery (Paintsville); 1 brother, William Haney (Flint, Michigan); and 3 sisters, Mrs. Leona Webb (Cabin Creek, West Virginia), Mrs. Bessie Ward (Alma, Ohio), and Mrs. Ina Risner (New Boston, Ohio). (Taken from the obituary page of the The Johnson County Historical & Genealogical Society's website.)

When Everett Conley's World War I draft registration card was filled out on June 5, 1917 in Johnson County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a laborer working for J. B. Gullett on the Big Sandy River, that he had a dependent wife and mother, and that he was born December 27, 1892 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky. He was found to be short and stout, and he had blue eyes and dark brown hair. Not being able to read or write, he signed the card with an "X."

Mr. and Mrs. John Rice first settled on what was later known as the Sam Hale farm on Middle Creek, when they came to the Big Sandy. From there they moved to the head of Jennie's Creek.
In 1837 Mr. Rice had, on Jennie's Creek, 350 acres of land, 4 slaves, and 400 head of cattle (see Floyd County tax list).
It is said that John Rice was a great fiddler. There is a tradition in the family that Mr. Rice was captured when a young man by some Indians, who took him to their camps in Tennessee to make music for them. They later released him and he returned to his home, which was said to have been in the neighborhood of Roanoke, Virginia. He later with his two brothers and sister came to Kentucky. It was near Cumberland Gap that he met and married Miss Davis. They are buried on the head of Jennie's Creek.
Through an error the name of Cynthia Rice was not included in the above list of children of John and Nancy Rice. It should be added thereto. She married Robert Prater, a son of John Prater, and they lived at Bloomington, Kentucky. Robert and Cynthia Prater had the following children: John, Wiley, William, and Mary Elizabeth. The sons all lived in Missouri. Mary Elizabeth married Captain Jeff Prater.
The last one is living and is known as "Aunt Lizzie" Prater. She has many friends in Eastern Kentucky. For many years she was in charge of the Prater Hotcl, known over the entire State as the best place to get good things to eat. In years past, traveling men rnade an effort to reach the Prater Hotel for the good things to eat and the comfortable homelike surroundings. "Aunt Lizzie" was always on the job. After the death of Captain Prater she lived at the hotel, until a few years ago when she went to housekeeping at the age of seventy-three. Not long ago she underwent a serious operation that almost cost her her life, but she is now as spry as a woman much younger than she.
Doing good has been her life work. her money and her time are always spent freely in helping others and her noble Christian life can be seen in her happy countenance and putting it in her own words: "The Lord has spared my life for some purpose and I am thankful that I am still able to live and meet my friends."
This grand old woman is a valuable asset to any community and she will leave her family and friends the perfect satisfaction of a long life of usefulness, spent in the service of her friends and neighbors. Everybody knows her and everybody loves her. "Aunt Lizzie" is an aunt of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Bailey of Paintsville.
