He married SARAH ELLEN "ELLEN" MERRITT, daughter of EDWARD MERRITT and BIDDIE DOTSON, June 24, 1899 in Floyd County, Kentucky. She was born February 5, 1879 in Floyd County, Kentucky, and died July 31, 1957 in Boyle County, Kentucky.

Sarah Ellen Merritt was the sister of Cleo Merritt, who had a child with Emmanuel "Manuel" Fitzpatrick. She was also the sister of Lewis Merritt, Hattie Elizabeth Merritt, William "Bill" Merritt, and of Mary Alice Merritt, who married Edgar Hannah, son of Isaac Harmon Hannah and Lydia Margaret Arms.

According to his death certificate, Bill Merritt died June 18, 1938 in Abbott, Floyd County, Kentucky, from a pulmonary hemorrhage caused by pulmonary tuberculosis. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Kentucky, his birth date as August 16, 1897, his occupation as farmer, his parents as Edd Merritt (b. Dotson, Kentucky) and Biddie Dotson (b. Notes: When Fred Ashley's World War I draft registration card was filled out on June 5, 1917 in Greenup County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a steel worker working for Ashland Steel Company in Ashland, that he was married and had a child, and that he was born July 15, 1893 in Oldtown, Kentucky. He was found to be tall and slender, and he had brown eyes and black hair. Not being able to read or write, he signed the card with an "X."

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Phillips Salyer, in November of 1953. Sarah May's maiden name was determined by finding the birth record transcripts of 2 of her sons, Charles R. Bellomy (b. October 31, 1915, Boyd County) and Henry Andrew Bellomy (b. October 16, 1917, Boyd County).
