He was born January 24, 1888 in Johnson County, died January 4, 1983 in Highlands Regional Medical Center, and was buried in Estep Cemetery in Fuget. Johnny Cantrell who was about 60, was found dead Monday morning on Tick Lick in Johnson Co., near the Johnson - Magoffin county line. It is reported that Cantrell was slain by Buddy Hall, a brother-in-law, following a quarrel between the two men. Hall is said to have returned to his home in Magoffin Co., where he was arrested by officials of that county. He was lodged in jail awaiting examining trial. Cantrell’s remains were taken to the Prater Funeral Home in Salyersville. [Paintsville Herald Thursday 9-10-1942]

     John Curtis, 93, of Camp Bennett died Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Dovie Howard of Camp Bennett. Death followed a three-week illness with complications.
     Mr. Curtis was born May 10, 1856 in Johnson County, Ky., a son of Hiram and Sarah LeMaster Curtis. He was a retired farmer and had been a resident of Scioto County for 27 years.
     Mr. Curtis was married March 17, 1877 to Cynthia Ellen Cantrell and she preceded him in death in 1948.
     Surviving are seven children, Mrs. Rissie Wright of Lucasville rt 2, Mrs. Lou Ferguson of Blaine, Ky., Mrs. Florence Ward of Sciotoville rt 4, Mrs. Nola Boggs and Mrs. Dovie Howard of Sciotoville rt 2, Worthy Curtis of West Jefferson, Thomas Curtis of Walnut st; a brother, Thomas Curtis of Red Bush, Ky., a sister, Jane McKinzie of Huntington; 59 grandchildren; 80 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren. Five children preceded him in death.
     Funeral services are to be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the residence with Revs. Sandy Phillips and Paul Turner in charge. Burial is to be in Bennett Cemetery at Minford under the direction of Melcher Funeral Home.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Curtis Hamilton, in September of 1932. He was survived by 2 sons, Foster Hamilton (of Ashland) and Victor Hamilton (Lexington); 3 daughters, Mrs. Madge Hanson (Ashland), Miss Verlie Hamilton (Ashland), and Miss Neva Hamilton (Ashland); 1 brother, John Hamilton (Ashland); 1 half-brother, Ben Hamilton (Ashland); and 3 half-sisters, Mrs. Edna Daniels (Thealka), Mrs. Edith Boltan (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), and Mrs. Grace Meade (California).
