ELZY SALYER, son of BENJAMIN HENDRICKS SALYER and MALISSA MARGARET WILLIAMS, was born August of 1873 in Johnson County, Kentucky, and died before 1915. He married LOURANA SALYER, daughter of SAMUEL P. SALYER and URSULA EVANS, April 15, 1893 in Johnson County, Kentucky. She was born in February of 1872 in Kentucky, and died February 28, 1963 in Rushylvania, Logan County, Ohio. She married (2) GEORGE WASHINGTON MCKENZIE on April 11, 1915 in Johnson County, Kentucky. He was born about 1868 in Kentucky.

Notes: Information on this family can be found on page 290 of "The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky," published and sold by The Magoffin County Historical Society. In that book it says that Elzy Salyer was born in 1872 and married a lady by the name of Lourany. Their child was Troy Salyer, who was born in 1897.

Lourana Salyer was the sister of Mary Elizabeth Salyer, Samuel Bracken "Bracken" Salyer, Thomas A. Salyer, and Henry Columbus "Lum" Salyer.

There was another Elzie Salyer in the area at the same time. According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, Elzie Salyer (age 27) married Clarinda Brown (age 20) on July 28, 1899 in Johnson County. They couldn't be found in the 1900 or 1910 census. But in 1911, William Elzie Salyer died on February 2, 1911 in Flat Gap, Johnson County, from a brain tumor. His birthplace is listed as Johnson County, his birth date as August 18, 1873 (the Elzie who married Lourana Salyer was born in August of 1873, according to the 1900 census), his marital status as married, his occupation as farmer, his parents as Levi Salyer (b. Johnson County) and Sarah McKinzie [Sarah McKenzie] (b. Johnson County), the informant as T. A. Salyer of Flat Gap, and the burial place as the family cemetery in Flat Gap. It appears that the Elzie Salyer who married Lourana Salyer in 1893 was the son of Benjamin and Malissa Williams Salyer, as the 2 families are living next to each other when the 1880 census was taken. One thing to note, however, is that Elzy's brother, Claud, married Mary Brown, and Mary had a sister by the name of Clarinda, and she was the same age as the Clarinda Brown who married Elzie Salyer. 2 houses away from Elzy and Lourana in 1900, there is a "Doctor" [or something like that, it's hard to read] and Clara Salyer family. He was born in March of 1872 in Kentucky, and she was born in May of 1880 in Kentucky, which is when Clarinda Brown was born, according to the 1880 census.

(son, born in Kentucky, age 12), Lourana (daughter, born in Kentucky, age 9), and Elizabeth Evans (sister-in-law, single, servant, born in Kentucky, father born in North Carolina, mother born in Virginia, age 42). They are living next to Lourana's future husband's family.

He's married to Clara who was born in May of 1880 and they have been married for 1 year. She hasn't had any children.

On pages 19 & 20 of the 1940 census for District 11-27 (Wayne) in Champaign County, Ohio (dated May 1, 1940), George McKenzie is listed as the head of the household for house #221, he's a farmer, born in Kentucky, he's living in the same house that he was in 1935, he has an 8th grade education, and he's 71 years old.
